I bought it yesterday (couldn't resist!) -- it has great potential, in some ways it's a huge step forward for the franchise, but it is pretty buggy at the moment.
I would say three important points are:
1. It's the best Total War yet in a number of important ways -- cities within regions, naval combat, AI diplomacy, bigger world map, better graphical interface and options, and many other features that really are a huge improvement over past TW games.
2. It's not a direct competitor to RS2 -- the style of combat is very different, and you need a really powerful pc to get decent graphics on it. With my current system, RS2 looks much better than E:TW. I imagine when I upgrade my graphics card and can take advantage of all the neat effects in E:TW like the volumetric effects, smoke, distance effects, haze etc., it will look amazing, but with my Nvidia 8800 RS2 runs much smoother.
3. Not a chance in hell anyone will mod this for the Roman era, not for years, if at all. RS2 still has an open field to become the best Roman Total War experience.

I have had E:TW since it came out and it is certainly the best TW game yet. However it has a few annoying bugs which will hopefully be ironed out with patches, so the potential is excellent. E:TW is not a serious threat to RS2, RTW is the only TW where you can host the kind of mod that RS2 is without causing people to get a major computer upgrade. I would also imagine that modding E.TW into a Roman era mod would be a highly unenviable task if not impossible.

I think i will wait til the patches come out. Or someone mods it.
If you go to site, there are plenty of objections on the A1, which is the backbone of the game.
Also i have 8800 Nvidia, and it makes no since buying a new game card just the play this game ETW. So for me i will wait. I have seen reports that others are going back to RTW. Because they love the A1 compared with ETW.
But these are just opinions. And i will wait and watch.

I think a lot of ETW players will be returning to earlier TW games in the coming months -- and frankly there aren't many M2 mods that are really worth playing for long, so if we can get the word out, RS2 could be incredibly popular, I have no doubt of that...
Yup!
Oh yes one question, why cant we get moving skies like kingdoms t.w. ?

Where else can you play Sparta taking on Rome?![]()
lolol ...yeah!
About my last question ?![]()

The way the weather was handled in M2TW is, unfortunately, beyond the abilities of RTW. I have checked every single file in both M2TW and RTW that has anything to do with this...and there is just no way. The 'mechanism' just doesn't exist in RTW.

Interestingly, E:TW doesn't have moving clouds, at least not on my system, not even when I push the sky setting to 'ultra'. Not sure why that is, but in some ways the engine seems inferior to M2TW, graphically. In other ways it's a big step forward -- so it seems to be a bit of a mixed bag, at least as far as my Nvidia 8800 runs it.
I've spent 80 quid on Total War games since RTW, but I just can't get past RTW. Empire, even though I SHOULD love it just doesn't grip me like rome did and still does. I guess it's like I can't play any other civilization game except civ2, evn though 3 and 4 were great games.
EDIT: Plus general cam has me hooked like never before! Every battle is a stress and mayhem filled chaos rather than the more ordered 'god view' it used to be. Love it!

ETW is great in it's own way. RS is in another era and shouldn't be threatened by it.
I would recommend ETW to anybody that has liked the other TW games so give a crap at what those others says and buy it to support CA, they are clearly worth it.

It's fun but way more stressful. If you try it be prepared to lose more battles!

I think the reason why RTW gripped us more than any other TW game is because the system was all unseen and brand new. With E:TW and M2TW we knew roughly what to expect and we knew it will be similar to the RTW system. RTW on the other hand was a huge breakthrough in TW game circles.

True...and hopefully not to sound like a broken record.....I really believe that the Classical Era has far more appeal. The Middle Ages after the fall of the Empire were boring. Petty kingdoms with petty kings fighting for petty gains. The whole time period lacks the grand goals of global empire, conquering the known world, destiny and generals that people still remember to this day. Where were the Hannibals, the Alexanders, the Caesars, the Antony and Cleopatra's! These times dictated the destiny of western civilization...the middle ages just jumbled it up and mired it in medioacracy.

And 90% percent of all M2 mods are the same
With Rome, we have mods that cater to different tastes- fantasy? FATW. Spine-chilling battles? SPQR. Graphical quality and gameplay improvements? RS. I could go on and on.
you're right - though, there is something rather stirring (in a patriotic way) about seeing Redcoats form squares to repel French cavalry charges...i can't wait for the (hopefully inevitable) Napoleonic Wars expansion pack!
