DooM 3 and F.E.A.R are fine if you're looking for 'OMG WHERE DID THAT COME FROM!?!?' kind of horror

Hard to say since I'm such a MAN that I never get scared of video games - haha.

But I'd say some of the most unnerving titles out there are the Silent Hill games, Dead Space, some of the Resident Evil games, Doom 3, and the FEAR series...at least this is what I can recommend from experience I don't know about those obscure horror titles like Fatal Frame and what not.

    Nice failspy

Anyways, I can't actually recall the last time a game actually scared me because I've been immune to the whole "surprise!" thing for a long time. I haven't really played a suspense type of game that was done successfully either.

I've shied away from real horror too, because I'm not a real man either . I played a little bit of Dead Space a few weeks ago, it was pretty creepy but not outright terrifying. More disturbing. Maybe it gets scarier further into the game. I'll start on the RE games one of these days.

    Silent Hill.

Doom 3 and F.E.A.R. only have shock value, Silent Hill genuinely freaks me out and leaves me turning on several night lights for a whole month.

F.E.A.R. was probably the scariest. Silent Hill will make you hate static forever, and Shivers is oldschool but well made (though not that scary).

Fatal Frame 2. This game was creepy as hell. I remember people used to come over to my place to watch me play this game, like it was a horror movie. Sometimes they would ask me to shut it off and turn the lights on because they were so creeped out.

    EDIT:

Here are some videos of the gameplay with the reactions of the people playing. I have to say, my reactions were pretty much the same. There were times when I would just pause and walk away from the game to regain my sanity. It might look silly in the videos, but until you've played it in a dark room, you don't understand. Also, just so you know, these 2 videos contain foul language from some scared individuals.

Lmao at the other videos. It does look funny but it's completely understandable.

I second (third ?fourth? whatever) the Silent Hill games. I played 2, 3 and 4 on PC and even with the hilariously bad voice acting (at least on 2) they're all terrifying. There's a constant sense of dread and the plot is pretty deep and involving. You might want to peek at a non-spoiler walkthrough to see the requirements for the different endings, though, as the games are pretty damn long and you might not want to replay the whole thing just to get the "best" ending.

I agree with Fatal Frame 2 (My versions called Project Zero wtf? its definitely the same game though i remember the scenes from those videos

I used to have friends over to watch me playing 'cos it was scarier than any film

The moment when you walk past the well and a hand comes out really quickly is the scariest moment of my life, it was sooooooo like the ring and i was scared to go past it for ages

People keep saying "silent hill" but they never clearify further which is odd considering there are six... one two three four five six, silent hill games. Was Resident Evil 4 scary, cause I heard it was a good game but never heard anything about how intense it was. Also Yahtzee seems obssesed with Condemed, has anyone ever played that?

Well Silent Hill 1 on the original Playstation, Silent Hill 2 & 3 on the PC, PS2 and XBOX, Silent Hill 4 on the PC (and I think 360 and XBOX) and whatever the most recent game is on PC and next gen consoles (havn't played it yet) - these are considered the 'core' games, although I thought there was only that one spinoff for the PSP. All are excellent horror games, although each has a slightly different emphasis on the style and tone of the horror.

Silent Hill 1 might look too dated for some people, but 2, 3 and 4 still look very good thanks to a mix of film grain and fixed camera positions (i.e. less to render, I guess).

Plotwise, 1 and 3 (possibly the latest one too, I don't want to spoil it for myself) are part of the main storyline, although in the case of three this doesn't become entirely clear until somewhere between a quarter and halfway through the game, IIRC. I strongly recommend you avoid spoilers for those games you havn't played.

Silent Hill 2 and 4, on the other hand, are more personal stories which contain references and sometimes characters from the main titles - they're part of the same universe and are 'canon' etc., just more like secondary tales centered around the general history and mythology of Silent Hill itself. I'm guessing that's what the PSP version is about too, but I've never played or read up on it.

Personally I found SH2 the most deeply affecting game, though I cannot stress enough how awful most of the voice actors are. It has probably the most interesting and tragic protagonist, iconic 'bosses' and companions, good pacing and is just plain visually haunting. Silent Hill 4 is good too, although it has perhaps the shallowest protagonistout of all the games.

    Hope that helps .

Yes, I liked Condemned 2, it was very interesting.
