I can't believe such a thing has happened and the police did not investigate or even condemn the murderes? I mean , I would have understood if it had happened in some backward part of Afghanistan with by the taliban with the village elder or whatever being to afraid to report/stop it, but I thought S. africa was one of the more developed african countries?

The point is, it was. Don't get me wrong. Apartheid is gone, which is great. But what came after that? Everybody was so thrilled back then, that none even tried to think forward. Just for the sake of example: I read once, that 2/3 of the Johannesburg population was a victim of crime in span of four years.
A friend of mine is a white South African. His mother (a reputed neurosurgeon) was badly beaten up by police in the 70's in the anti-Apartheid demonstration. After that, they moved to Israel. He's visiting his cousins in SA almost every year and says that situation is changing very little.
As for the article and the video attached, I like this line:

The problem is that the culture is still not acceptive.. Truth is that the whites didnt like blacks in apartheid, but blacks didnt like whites either, And those old prejiduces havent changed much. Lesbians are still not treated that well, and if anything the abrupt ending of the apartheid just led to more hate through empowerment then it did to the lessening of it.

But when something like this happens in SA, you can't kick your way through the crowd condemning it, and having all sorts of reprisals in mind, even stripping SA of a sports event.

The difference between China and South Africa is simple.
China can stop its abuses at will, as it is state-controlled.

South Africa's problems are cultural, and can't simply be stopped for a period of time.

Besides, politics and the safety of fans trumphs sports any day of the week. I was against China getting the Olympics. The fact they won it at all was a political statement anyway.

According to these stats, "1,300 women can be expected to be raped daily". By 2006, "a woman was raped in SA every 17 seconds" . And "this did not include the number of child rape victims".
Look at this. I know it's WorldNetDaily. Nonetheless, even if it's partially true, it's stunning.
