    Finally! FINALLY!

EA loses Lord of the Rings license

EA will no longer be publishing Lord of the Rings games after its license to do so expired at the end of last year claims a report.

The license has now reverted to Warner, and reports suggest that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will now handle LotR game publishing duties.

"It's a safe bet that Warner Bros. won't be licensing out Lord of the Rings again. Instead, based on logic and what some sources have told me, expect Warner Bros. to start producing Lord of the Rings games itself soon," says Variety, although Warner refused to confirm the news.

There are two Hobbit movies due for release in 2011 and 2012 that sound ripe for game spin-offs. And hopefully any new LotR games will be better than Lord of the Rings: Conquest which, according to the report, had to be rushed out as EA's publishing license drew to a close.

It doesn't seem to be so much of a coincidence now that they rushed LotR: Conquest. :hmmm:

Well, I did like the Return of the King game for PC and the BfME series was not that bad either (though the game balance was seriously ). But I can't deny that I'm looking forward to the hopefully a lot more carefully developed games if Warner Bros. should really decide on getting out some new LotR games. That's something highly likely though with the Hobbit movies coming soon.

Anyway, EA has got more than enough franchises to milk for more money so they certainly don't get any pity from me.

    That's great news.
I hope they will try to re-do conquest and do it properly.

I shall give this some cautious optimism.

This is good news that EA lost the license, but I feel bored of LotR now. Maybe if some games were done on the second or first age I'd be interesting but the third age has been done to death and is based off the film mostly (which is dumb as it is basing something off a secondary source).

Better EA than Warner... I don't want giant media conglomerates to enter video gaming.

Why is everyone so anti-EA? I've got no opinion of them and I'm not too bothered about SecuROM.

I have a horrible opinion about them. But I've cared about many small developers that they've dismantled. I also hate their habit of pushing a game out the door before it's ready, and only patching it if it meets mass success. And I care a great deal about DRM liek SecureROM.

Because they make crappy games and destroy popular franchises.

Dungeon Keeper 2 = EA bought up and closed the studio that made those games.

Medal of Honor = It had a good start but these days it just not really good.
Battlefield= Same as Medal of Honor really
Dead Space= A good game no doubt even if it was "safe"
Mirror's Edge = Now this is more like it, a risky move and good that EA took it.
Crysis = Again, overall a safe game
Mass Effect= Published by Microsoft actually, EA bought Bioware after Mass Effect was released.

i love how some people wrongfully attribute a franchise/game to the publisher when its the developer that have worked their ass off. i look at DI & DICE only when thinking of Battlefield, all the while EA puts 6 of their logos on the boxes and places their intro logo movie before that of the developer's.

Umm, They made 1 or 2 of those.... Publishing is like Getting the nerd to write your test and passing it in with your name on it... (except EA fails the test)

Well, playing the devil's advocate here, wouldn't that essentially mean that in fact it's not EA's fault that most of their games are broken, buggy, and crappy but the developers who make them?

I mean sure, I'm aware that publishers at least have some say in the making or releasing of the game but if the game is just terrible the developers should be taking most of the responsibility for that shouldn't they?

I suppose... They just want to make money like anybody, and releasing as much games as they can will get them the money... kinda.

"The blame will be put on the people who made the game", EA thinks that.. but nope.

Hmmm...don't know how I feel about that...

Naturally I'm not very trusting of EA, like most of you guys I can admit that they've ruined some good games and have put out a bunch of questionable titles - but is Warner Bros gonna be any different? Sure there are some benefits of having games made by movie/media companies but...I don't know...I'm not entirely sure that the Lotr is out of video game hell quite yet.

Honestly though...I'm sort of tired of Lotr...at least the same rehashed BS that they've been shoving down our throats between the films, video games, and every other conceivable source of profit. I would actually be fine with them not making another Lotr game for a long time.

Also....to support Daimon here he does have a point...EA published or had a part in every one of those games which have been agreed upon as being quite good if not excellent...also don't forget The Sims games...sure they might be the poster child for money grubbing franchises (next to WoW) but you can't say they're not fun games.

    Good!

Now all we need is Sega to get the licence, so we can finally have some proper LoTR Battles (official, with music etc, before we start about the LoTR mods for MTW2).

Edit: Just read about Warner: what the hell do they know about games??

Oh and EA losing the Fifa licence would be nice as well, since they don't give a flying about the PC versions!
