    Default Battle system of Post-Marian Project

    After DimeBagHo revised battle system, this made me start rethinking about battle concept of PMP but due to I didn't play tactical mode so I'm not quite sure that the idea would be good for PMP or not.

    PMP Battle concept ideas.
    - All units will have 1 HP except elephants, Berserkers, and Spartan Royal Guard(without additional HP would made them not worth 30 turn recruitment). For Sword Master, Champions, and Dosidataskeli will have insane amount of defense instead to encourage to made them kill in classic death of the heroes in hand of the ordinaries, by arrow shot.
    - All HA will get higher penalty in scrub and settlement area.
    - All Barbarian archer will have high forest terrain bonus but All archer and cavalry from east(except india which seem normal in forest) beyond Mediterranean will have huge penalty in it.
    - Heavy infantry will stronger in the west of Mediterranean and even more if for each step further west.
    - All heavy infantry and cavalry will subject more to heat and sand than lighter units especially if they come from the west.
    - Cavalry charging distance lowered to decrease the chance of cavalry charge fail.
    - All germans heavy infantry without special formation will have ability to form wedge formation as an option.
    - All other barbarian units without special formation should have loose formations as an option.

    - Lighter units must run generally faster than heavier ones(modding skeleton needed) to made lighter units have more tactical value than just the fodders.
    Here is the composition of hardiness and speed
    -->light units = fast model+very_hardy
    -->medium units = fast model+hardy
    -->heavy units = slow model+hardy
    -->*all civic units will be hardy regardless class
    -->*all horse culture cavalry will be very_hardy regardless class except very heavy one
    -->*some ultra training elite will be very_hardy too

    - Archer will stronger in the east of Mediterranean and even more if for each step further east.
    - Increase quiver size of
    -->all foot archers from 25 to 30 in the west and 40 in the east
    -->all slinger from 30 to 35
    -->kestros from 25 to 30
    -->dart up to 8(PMP feature, small fletch jevelin for celtic levy with low damage and lethality but high accuracy, planned to add in PMP)

    - Level of firpower/range(with is reduce range as many people think archer is too overpower)
    -->dart(damage 7/range 50)ap
    -->javelin(damage 8-9/range 40)ap
    -->heavy javelin(damage 10-13/range 30)ap
    -->pilum(damage 12-15/range 25)ap
    -->sling(damage 5/range 90)ap
    -->elite sling(damage 7/range 90)ap
    -->kestros(damage 7/range 90)ap
    -->basic hunter/archer-west(damage 7/ range 60)(hunting)
    -->generic foot archer-west(damage 7 /range 80)(skirmish)
    -->elite foot archer-west(damage 8/range 100)(bombard)
    -->generic foot archer-east(damage 8/range 100)(bombard)
    -->Indian longbow(damage 9/range 120)(bombard)
    -->elite foot archer-east(Composite bow)(damage 10/range 120)(bombard)
    -->generic HA(damage 8/range 80)(aimed and fire)
    -->elite HA(damage 10/range 100)(aimed and fire)
    -->Tocharian horse-archer(damage 10/range 120)(aimed and fire)
    -->Crossbow(damage 8/range 140)ap

    - Set projectile accuracy(fewer mean more accurated, 0 = always hit)(need test)
    -->generic bombard-type archer = 0.15(elite west and most of east foot archer)
    -->generic skirmish-type archer = 0.1(generic west with shorter range and easier to aim)
    -->horse-archer = 0.1(aim before fire but how much you would expect from horseback)
    -->hunter/famous archer = 0.05(snipe and fire!)
    -->dart = 0.05(most accurate among javelin type)
    -->javelin = 0.1
    -->heavy javelin = 0.1
    -->pilum = 0.1
    -->slinger = 0.15
    -->kestros = 0.05
    -->Crossbow bolt = 0.05

    Well, sounds great to me, . I´m already using most of these features for a couple of months and i assure that battles are fun (except the 3hp...i prefer to raise the defense skill a bit and the armor of the generals by 1....is logical that bodyguards/super elites are more able than normal soldiers and their equipment is top quality...but "mess with the best, die like the rest" i don´t like them to be tougher in the same sense that an elephant is tougher)

    I normally play with HA and i get used to them in mods where they really sucked, before i learned to mod myself, so now i´m an accomplished tactician with them now, and in XGM they don´t suck as in RTR for example...But even with that, i was defeated a couple of times with this system! once, the seleucids managed to surround me with about 1.5 of my numbers divided in two armies and i was soundly defeated

    Question: where i can edit missile ranges? the game is not taking my editing just in descr_projectiles_new

    A feaature that i suggest for taming the feared HAs, some of wich you already pointed, is terrain penalties. Don´t forget "scrub", as most city streets counts as it, so i give my HAs horrible penalties (-9, -7) on scrub and forests respectively. Attila has to dismount to battle at the Catalaunic Camps. I don´t think that they should be given penalties on sand, for example, as horses generally do it pretty well on it, and only parthians/bactrians/sabaeans should be given snow penalties.

    I have test on lethality of range, it seem to be could not do anything beyond 1 (if more than 1, it would affect as 1) so I think I will go on increase some defending skill instead.

    I also test on defense skill and seem that even at high defense skill archer still willingly to shot enemy than just mindlessly charge.

    This is the first time that I agree with RedFox more than with DimeBagHo though.

    I fear that my concept on range units will be too strong, so anyone please suggest something to balance them out.

    A couple of points about lethality: (1) As you have noticed values above 1.0 are treated as 1.0. (2) Lethality does not affect ranged attacks.

    In the projectiles file you can set the damage done by projectiles. But in my own experiments that didn't seem to make any difference to the effect of projectiles like arrows on infantry.

    Defense does not affect ranged attacks either, so increasing defense will make ranged units a lot more effective relative to melee units.

    To control the power of ranged units I think there are three viable ways to go: (1) Extra hitpoints (the current XGM method), (2) Reduced accuracy (the old XGM method); (3) Reduced ammo (the DTW method).

    How about more general combination of HP1 units and HP2 units? For instance those troops that can be recruited from lvl1, lvl2 and lvl3 Barracks would have one hitpoint and normal unit size (e.g. 100-120 infantry men), and certain troops that can be recruited from lvl4 and lvl5 Barracks would have 2 hitpoints and smaller unit size (e.g. 50-60 infantry men). This is just a rough generalization, I am not sure how well it would work in the game and affect to the balance.

    Personally I think perhaps we could use those Roman Principes and Greek Thorikitai as good stardard units that can be compared to both lower and higher level units...

    Suppanut, one thing we might want to do is to create a separate unit class system that could be used to decide recruitment level of units.

    For example:

    - garrison (lvl 0): poor morale, poor training, very poor equipment. Exception is Carthage which can afford better equipment but with worse training. Emergency and garrison troops.

    - levy (lvl1): poor morale, poor training, poor equipment. Cheap troops meant to be used as reserves and non-critical roles in the battlefield

    - militia (lvl2): poor morale, mediocre training, mediocre equipment: troops recruited from the lower classes meant for low intensity battles and bandit chasing.

    - semi-professional (lvl3): average morale, training and equipment: part-time soldiers that can be expected to perform adequately as long as they don't face heavy troops, usually recruited from the middle class

    - professional (lvl4): average morale, good training and equipment: full-time soldiers, either mercenaries or lower class troops equipped by the state, able to stand above most troops but still vulnerable under pressure

    - minor nobility (lvl4): good morale, average training and good equipment. warrior nobility that has a stake in the outcome of the battle. They can afford better equipment but don't have the same discipline of experienced warriors.

    - heroic (lvl4): excellent morale, good training, average equipment: gaesatae-style barbarian troops.

    - nobles (lvl5): excellent morale, good training, excellent equipment. These soldiers will fight had as they cannot afford to loose their honor in battle. Can afford very good equipment and to spend considerable time training.

    - assault (lvl5): good morale, excellent training, excellent equipment. Full-time experienced soldiers, trained and equipped for heavy fighting.

    - elite (lvl5): excellent morale, training and equipment. The best troops recruitable by the faction, will be either extremely expensive, longer to train or in smaller numbers.

    To better explain:

    morale: self-explanatory
    training: base attack and defence stats
    equipment: armour and letality, can also affect attack
    The Best Is Yet To Come:

    Zarax, here is the rough concept on unit's class you ask. It based mostly on your idea and exact level of unit class maybe based on culture type of factions

    I think about different system between some culture with decentralize nature like barbarian, eastern, and greek which roster will differ according to settlement size like what we see in Diadochi: Totalwar.(Good example is Barbarian which in town level all units are somehow naked at least in upper body but when grow into bigger city unit will wear something and gradually lost the naked ones, but will build those in armour or shirt instead. And if reach huge city level, that settlement will no longer able to build those sexy topless units at all.) And culture that army are somehow centralized in concept like roman, carthaginian, and egypt which main roster are roughly in standardization in every city.

    Rough list plus example units.
    Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Sounds good, I like the ideas behind light units moving fast and having a viable tactical role as a result.

    However, those barbarians have some pretty insane morale values....would be kind of odd for Roman legionaries to break and run before barbarians do

    If you recall Caesar's battles in Gaul, once the main force realized they were outmatched, they ALL routed. There weren't any "fanatics" or "berserkers" who stayed around to fight to the death surrounded when the rest of their force had ran away.

    mmmm but in that case, making it REAL would be increasing Roman morale, no downing barbarian morale. Its real that reading De Bello Gallica one get the impresion that the gauls break easily, but in that case, Pontic an even Seleucid troops should also have downed morale. Caesar dominated the Pontics with a tenth of the work that he put in Gaul.

    Are you sure that lethality above 1.0 in melee is not taken into account?

    True. I'd increase Roman values but also increase the expense of their troops accordingly. Especially upkeep to represent their logistical costs.

    Thing is, the Romans dominated basically every faction at some point, but they also lost a few times: Carthage was crushed most of the time, yet Hannibal reversed this, Parthia beat them at Carrhae, the Germans in the Varus ambush, etc. It doesn't mean that Germania and Parthia should get super powered units just because they beat the Romans once, by the same token Pontus shouldn't be nerfed for losing once.

    Make no mistake, Roman legionaries under decent leadership more often than not crushed the opposition, that's how they took over the civilized world. But there has to be some kind of disadvantage to balance that out somewhat.
    Are you sure that lethality above 1.0 in melee is not taken into account?
    I'm not sure, but I thought that it was a percentage chance to kill with direct hit, and that 1.0 is 100%.

    I just test it on range for now which my result is differ from DBH as there are some different between arrow with 0.8 lethality and 1.0 lethality(about 15% more kill in 5 test). I will test it on melee units tomorrow if you want to.

    For unit to break or not break have 2 value effect it
    1) morale
    2) discipline

    Most of roman units have "disciplined" level of discipline which made them so hard to loss morale so at the same morale level, roman unit will break after enemy. While most of barbarian unit have "impetuous" level which I not certain about it except cause them to may charge without order, perhap morale may loss faster than disciplined.

    Now I develop more on ideas about how roster in non centralized politic factions work on 3 culture include barbarian(they are almost complete decentralized, eastern(they are feudalist which mean decentralized to the degree), greek(they have city state and decentralized governing system according to factions). The main reason of this idea is to avoid roster limit in training window and emulate decentralization as well as different in state of development of areas. For roman, carthaginian and egyptian, they will roughly use the old system which main roster are the same in linear from first level to fifth level.

    They way I use for decentralized it is based on the way RedFox done to Diadochi:TW rosters.

    Here is idea and concept.
    Barbarian decentralized rosters
    Reason of this change.
    1) Barbarian have very high decentralize nature
    2) Barbarian have very huge gap in the development with in faction from naked in early day to good chainmail in late era.
    3) They fight at high potential early although not much city development, so they must be able to have much of their core units early.
    4) Leave a lot of room for AOR
    5) All their early units will naked but as settlement grow, their units will get more and more cloth as well as protection and naked units gradually phase out.

    As Zarax state before, we need to create indepth concept of unit class to support battle system and tell what role the units in roster as well as stats.

    On units higher level than princep and thorakitai, we could class them in to
    1) Elite; gain privilege via fighting and life or die for it
    2) nobles; men who fight to keep privilege
    3) hero; the brave one who fight like one man show in direst situations
    4) assault; cream of the pro who must fight to tip the scale
    5) professional; fight as job and good at it

    Which kind(or kinds) of them that we should give them 2 hitpoint and which should not?

    Well, people, i have done extensive testing about lethality.

    Its true, 1.0 is 100% of probabilities....of causing ONE wound. If the middle unit has 2hp, then, AND ONLY THEN, Lethality above 1.0 makes a difference.

    Please test. test with dramatical changes, any unit with 1. 0 LEthality and later the same with its lethality increased to 1.5. You should see the difference. BUT ONLY IF BOTH UNITS HAS 2HP, otherwise not.

    Lethality of projectiles is always 1.0 apparently. They cannot be changed.

    Personally, i dislike giving units a different number of hit points. One man is one man. Increase the skill to 50 if you want, but i should prefer that, either everybody has 1 wound, or 2

    The only exception to this could be the Berserkers and other units under the influence of drugs than prevents some pain centers to work properly, then you must literally cut them to pieces to stop them. But giving them 2 wounds while the rest have 1 seems too much to me. If you take the 2hp system, them berserkes may have 3, but otherwise is prefereable to increase their defense skill.

    FOr example, i´m currently using the spartan royal guard with 1 wound and 9+12+6 defense, instead of 9+8+5

    Thank you, Anakarsis. I will update on lethality. By far, only acceptable target of more than 1 hp are elephants(both normal ones and drug-influence ones), and berserker anyway.

    So adopting 2hp system for XC is out of question?

    On XC, I don't known but by far I think CV still reluctant about it so he postpone to release 2 hp version of XC. But for PMP, I am just Idea-generator, outcome will up to whole team discussion and vote which back mainly on what DimeBagHo's XGM is. As now there are some uncertainly in XGM battle system, so I must answer that not sure yet.
