Default 1st Person view Debug mode try it!

I posted this when I figured it out in the general section back when the demo was out / but I just tested it with the full release and found it worked still so I thought I might share in the modding forum.

If your like me and want to be right in the Naval action (standing on the top deck of the ship like your the Captain) then this is for you

You will move with the ship at no matter where you put the camera it is just as though you are standing on the deck.

all you have to do is:

    Go To C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR NAME IS HERE\Application Data\The Creative Assembly\EmpireDemo2\scripts\ preferences.empire_script.txt

Open with word pad (or whatever you want) and find: default_camera_type 0, change the 0 to a 2 and save.

Start the game find the desired unit you want and hit "delete" and it will attach you to it and then you can swivel or move the camera up and down and your view will still stay attached to that unit. Just move the camera to where you want to stand on the ship.

And no the camera view will not follow cannon shot

I have used it in ground battles but the camera begins to trail and sometimes your view starts you underground (lol) so you have to move the camera up.

    Have Fun!!

Not on my PC but it is my understanding that some people have an issue if they get closer to the action.

but beware, sometime your camera starts in 500 m height and you can see the edges of the map. This will cause a lag
But its still worth it, absolutly.
You even can look into ships and buildings now

    ps:
    somebody had posted this before

Nice trick, I tried this once in the demo, and i'm not sure if it worked, so i'm gonna try it again.
My named ships in Empire Total War: (that i can remember)

    Fifth Rate, HMS Poseidon.

    Fifth Rate, HMS Dauntless.

    Fifth Rate, HMS Enterprise NCC-1701

    Fifth Rate, HMS Simi.

I too wrote about it before, and yes it still works in the full game. It's truly amazing if used in naval battles. Just like the OP says, it's just like your standing on the deck of a ship in the midst of a battle.

Yes you can. The only slightly annoying thing is that you sometimes when entering a battle end up way below, or above ground. If so, just select a unit and zoom in on it.

Same way as you do it on XP I suppose. Path to the file itself might be somewhat different though, but that should be all.

search for the folder appdata then go into roaming (vista)

I think appdata is a hidden folder, so you may need to unhide it, i think.

I'm trying to make this work but am having some problems. I've done everything right (changed 0 to 2), saved the file and made it "read only". However, once in the battle I still can't go lower than just over the soldiers' heads. ANy ideas.

Check again that it is set to 2, then go into game and straight into a battle. Do NOT go to the options. If any options are changed, and I'm not sure but might be enough you just go there and just OK out, camera gets reset in game to camera 1. Would in the prefs file too if it would of not been set to read only.

Great post John! Sheer excellence, sir! And of course, +rep all round.

I tried this and tested it. Works 100% awesome.

For anyone else reading this, just like Tassen said, even if you set your preferences.empire_script.txt to read only (I tried this trick) the view still resets IF you go into your options screen at any time thereafter (which I had been doing upto now testing different settings). So for anyone else reading this, like Tassen says, change your options first and only then when you are happy, exit the game, edit your preferences.empire_script.txt, re-start the game and start playing straight away. I wouldn't advise setting it to read only as you might forget (and none of your other in-game options will hold!) This of course isn't a perfect solution, as of the time of writing (hopefully a patch will solve this annoyance) some of the game options don't hold anyway (flags and some graphical HUD markers).

PS: Another camera tip for those who haven't looked at their key commands list; hover your mouse pointer over a point of interest and press the "N" key (zoom). Has the effect of "dropping the camera" if you press it immediately after the "insert" (inside view) key and keeps the camera origin fixed low on the water (providing you don't move your mouse without holding-down the middle button)
+ Total War without Jeff van Dyck is like Star Wars without John Williams +

    TY JohnHamm!

This view is soooo much better for ships!

For those who have vista and cant find the folder, try this.

    go to your "start" button
    Then go to "Run"
    type " %appdata% " in the run box.(without quotes)

Then follow the instructions at the top.
