    Default Battles BC

This past Monday the History Channel started it's "Battles BC" series. The first episode was on Hannibal and his battles against Rome. It was very entertaining. great fun listening to noted historians give their take on the man and the events.

Anyway, I reccommend it to any interested in the period. Made me want to break out RTW and crush Rome as Carthage!!

I found the show quite interesting, but the battles were awfully cheesy.

Did they have Roman soldiers wearing leather armor and using post-Marius shields and engaging in one-on-one fights like most of these shows?

Unfortunately, that is quite typical of History Channel documentaries on ancient Rome...

The History Channel is cool, only 3 years later they're jumping on the 300 bandwagon. Top.
Rarely have I seen a more blatant and embarrassing attempt to catch the interest of the young male demographic.

I watched a clip on YouTube...God it was awful! They got some wrestler or whatever to "portray" Hannibal and the whole thing is shot like "300".

I'll skip watching the rest. The BBC has better shows on the ancient world.

This is why I watch discovery, lately they have had better specials on history than the history channel.

The Military Channel is airing "Heroes and Villains" in the US as "Warriors". Much more interesting and better produced history.

The History Channel is two-faced now, one side is still an interesting, intelligent and scholarly program (Modern Marvels, Ancient Discoveries, etc), and on the other side is just plain stupid pseudoscience (UFO hunters, Monsterquest).

Does warriors ever air on discovery? I don't have the military channel and I have seen warriors once on discovery but I haven't seen it since.

Hannibal is black on this show? Catering to ethnocentric revisionists I see, History Channel.

I hate how documentaries try to be like 300.

    Here's another example:

I know it's actually based on Thermopylae, but I'd rather they just showed it as it would be. This documantary isn't even that good. The last History Channel series I quite enjoyed was:

From what I know about Thermopylae the History Channel special was spot on. They discussed the geography of the place, the naval battles at sea, the make-up and tactics of the armies involved. Also they had at least a half dozen historians talking about various aspects of the battle... thats the part on all these shows that I enjoy the most.

Also their Spartans didnt look anything like the movie 300 and actually fought in phalanx. The only thing they borrowed from the movie 300 was the red 300 in their title. Anyway was much more factual than the movie.
