Default Crowds protest around world for freedom in Tibet

NEW YORK (AP) — More than a thousand Tibetans and their supporters marched through the city Tuesday, saying they wanted to speak up for a silenced people on the 50th anniversary of the failed uprising that forced the Dalai Lama into exile.
Carrying a portrait of the Tibetan spiritual leader and chanting such slogans as "we want free Tibet," they followed a more than eight-mile route and rallied near the United Nations and the Chinese Consulate.

Armed paramilitary police have surrounded Tibetan monasteries across China. Inside, frightened monks have hidden away their illegal photographs of the Dalai Lama.
Officials were determined to avoid any renewed show of anti-Chinese feeling on the anniversary of the start of an insurrection that led to the flight of the region’s god-king into exile half a century ago.
I think these protests may actually harm the Tibetans more then help them.

i am sympathetic towards their cause. But it's over for Tibet. They will never be an independent country. The best they could hope for is that China becomes democracy and let Tibet be an autonomous region (real one, not fake one like today's) or some sort.

What strategic value is Tibet again?

probably not that much, except natural resources and a defensive barrier protecting the most populous area of china.

the key i think is really nationalism. Preserving china's land (albeit conquered land) is a key part of chinese nationalism because chinese nationalism itself was formed as a reaction towards western takeover of chinese land (HK, taiwan, macau, treaty ports and etc).

i am not 100% sure, but mao took it cuz he genuinely thought it was a part of china inheriting from Qing. He didn't really see it as a new conquest, but as a "recovery" for a land that slipped away when Qing collapsed.

i seriously doubt an independent tibet will emerge. Like i said, the best they could hope for is something like Quebec in Canada.

indeed indeed, cuz tibet slipped away when China became weak under foreign pressure. And mao wanted to show his new subjects that he could recover all the lands lost and make china strong again. So it was somewhat a nationalism PR move.

i will agree with lucien bianco's conclusion...chiang's regime had too much in common with the old chinese feudal system in an environment when a new china was emerging. He didn't adopt and the Chinese communists adopted.

Why is independence so important? What will it gain?

dalai lama wants to protect his people and his people's heritage, which is severely damaged under PRC, especially during the cultural revolution era.

my view is that unfortunately pretty much entire China is in the same situation as Tibet in terms of human rights. So if china moves towards democracy one day, it's hopeful that tibetans will have a better life. But even a democratic china won't become a less nationalist china. The best they could hope for is China granting tibet the autonomous status, making a true effort protecting tibetan heritage, and recgonizing the distinctiveness of tibetans as a nation of its own. Basically the Quebec model under Canada.

chiang represented mostly the chinese landlords and the old chinese mandarin class as well as the business elites. He was as a result a really reactionary leader with a lot of pretty fascist traits lmao. you can check out his whole "new life" ideology. It would be somewhat hard for him to be nice to the communists and USSR.
