    Default Obama embarrasses America

I don't normally post here all that often but I just had this sent to me and it may have already been covered but it seems pretty hilarious to me.
    "Mors Certa, Hora Incerta."

"We are a brave people of a warrior race, descendants of the illustrious Romans, who made the world tremor. And in this way we will make it known to the whole world that we are true Romans and their descendants, and our name will never die and we will make proud the memories of our parents." ~ Despot Voda 1561

"The emperor Trajan, after conquering this country, divided it among his soldiers and made it into a Roman colony, so that these Romanians are descendants, as it is said, of these ancient colonists, and they preserve the name of the Romans." ~ 1532, Francesco della Valle Secretary of Aloisio Gritti, a natural son to Doge

It says he gave Gordon Brown 25 DVDs. What were the DVDs?

As hard a time as I give the brits, our gifts should have been a tad bit more thoughtful. I fricken DVD set in exchange for a pen carved from the wood of the sister ship of the resolute. I mean, damn... The press conference I don't care all that much about, it could have been much more formal but the gifts we gave were really crap. I think, I may be wrong, but I think state gifts like this are the first lady's responsibility, and Michelle isn't exactly the quality we typically have in office apparently.

Sure I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is Im not. I honestly feel that America is the best country and all other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

A box of DVDs does not.
If it's Carry On Camping or the Monty Python Collection I think Brown can forgive him for that... Well.. I would anyway.

It isn't exactly the first undiplomatic act Obama has made to Britain, including getting rid of Churchill's Bust.

    This:

"I do not admit...that a great wrong has been done to the Red Indians of America, or the black people of Australia...by the fact that a stronger race, a higher grade race...has come in and taken its place" - Churchill to Palestine Royal Commission, 1937

Totally better than (and i'm paraphrasing from memory)

I have never been for whites and negros to live together as equals. One race must dominate the other and I as any other man would prefer to be the dominating race. ~ Abraham Lincoln.

You find all sorts of interesting quotes he made that was for slavery when it suited him, and against it later on when that suited him more.

@ Carpathian Wolf: It still serves as a justification for his removal of Churchill's bust. Also consider that while Lincoln actually took progressive steps to help blacks in the US, Churchill was an unabashed imperialist.

@ Eric: There's no reason not to judge people by our own standards, and while historical context might let us understand why earlier people held such beliefs, we are in no way obligated to justify them.

Really, it just would have been better if no "dick moves" would have been pulled. Consider a hypothetical dick move: someone rapes your daughter and she gives birth to the savior of humanity (or something like that); that in no way justifies the rape, nor should you expect anyone to condone it.

    It is very stupid to judge people who were raised over a century ago by our standards, for example;

"Why, of all places in Johannesburg, the Indian location should be chosen for dumping down all kaffirs of the town, passes my comprehension. Of course, under my suggestion, the Town Council must withdraw the Kaffirs from the Location. About this mixing of the Kaffirs with the Indians I must confess I feel most strongly. I think it is very unfair to the Indian population, and it is an undue tax on even the proverbial patience of my countrymen."

    That would be Gandhi.

I also feel you have been selective with your quotation. You could have well drawn this from Churchill:

"Thus ended the great American Civil War, which upon the whole must be considered the noblest and least avoidable of all the great mass conflicts of which till then there was record."

Rape is a horrible, horrible crime. There's no other way to put it, it is just horrible. But I think giving birth to the Messiah would justify a single rape. All of humanity vs One lady's pyschological state. I'm sorry, but the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few in this case. You have to look at the larger picture here. Sure, one woman suffered a horrible indignity, but all of humanity would be saved as a result. One small (in the grand scheme of things) bad thing against an enormous, enormous good thing. In that case, I think the ends justify the means. But we should never forget that this particular means is still a horrible, horrible crime.

For a different example, look at the Atomic bombings of Japan at the end of the Second World War. Thousands upon thousands died in those bombings, a tragedy in all respects. But look at the alternative... For the Invasion of Japan (codenamed Operation Downfall), Allied strategists were projecting casualties in the millions for the Allied armies and in the tens of millions for the Japanese.

“I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything.” - Abraham Lincoln

Didn't read anything about the gift faux-pas' but the churchill bust has been well reported in the US media.

my friend the prime minister of Great Britain heard me say that I greatly admired Winston Churchill and so he saw to it that the government loaned me this and I am most honored to have this Jacob Epstein bust of Winston Churchill.

Obama is replacing it with a Lincoln bust. It was removed from the Oval office when Bush left. Perhaps he could have kept it in storage for a while before returning it, but the president gets to decorate the Oval office. It is one of the few White House area's that is up to his descretion.
