Default Sudan, North Korea among least free states: report

"Within these entities, state control over daily life is pervasive and wide-ranging, independent organizations and political opposition are banned or suppressed, and fear of retribution for independent thought and action is part of daily life,"
Something really needs to be done to help those poor people.

North Korea has been a long time interest of mine. I hold that no nation in the history of the world, not even Stalinist Russia, is as messed up as North Korea. If North Korea and Sudan are supposedly the least free states then the comparison to be drawn here is probably equal to Russia being the largest country and Canada second, despite the massive difference that exists in square miles of land owned between both.

What can we do to help the people of North Korea? Not much. As the elderly generation who can remember a pre-Kim Korea is now starting to die out, the people who are left in this country are people who have grown up under Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il. They'll have known no better than this.

Part of me feels we should just steamroll North Korea once and for all. But now is not the time for any well-intentioned nation to do this.
I have approximate answers and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I’m not absolutely sure of anything, and many things I don’t know anything about. But I don’t have to know an answer. I don’t feel frightened by not knowing.

Haha mate I've seen pretty much every internet documentary and video on North Korea there is available. I could show you sicker stuff than this. If you're interested.

As have I, It breaks my heart. This is just one of the first things that popped up on youtube. It also amazes me how such a country can exist in 2009.

Try this documentary. It's a 14 episoded series of 3 to 4 minutes per episode. Each episode starts off with a little bit of propaganda and then it follows the reporters who made the documentary on foot.

The episode index is to the right of the screen.

Technology and civilization is nothing more than a nice convenient skin-deep cover for the depravities of humanity. It's nothing new. If anything, people working together in peace and harmony is amazing and unique. Oppression and chaos has always been the status quo of history.

Well, this is NK & Sudan we're talking about so...while still horrifying and retarded on countless levels...is it really a surprise?

Ironically enough, I think NK may be the world's first (and hopefully last) Communist theocratic monarchy.

Well, it's not that I want to be a buzzkill or a Debbie Downer or anything, it's just that I'm a realist, and the sad truth is that while humanity is capable of some of the most wonderful things, it doesn't change the fact that for the most part, it's an incredibly filthy stream.

Oh you're definitely being a Debbie Downer, that's for sure.

Of course our history of being able to think with the freedom we can today hasn't always been.

Sad though this is, it's hardly suprising or newsworthy.

my mom's colleagues went to NK in early 2000s. The poverty level is really beyond anyone's imagination. They brought along some bottled water and the hotel staff was amazed about it (seriously, bottled water is amazing?) and they gave him a bottle and he was so freaken happy.

The lady who gives tours at the people's library of Pyongyang is all excited about adjustable tables and how the great genius of eternal president Kim Il Sung has spawned these miracles of creation.

    It's beyond absurd.

Yeah I saw a video where this Eye doc went to NK and did Eye surgeries, after they healed and opened there eyes, the first thing they did was look at THE DEAR LEADER and started worshiping him and saying THANK YOU DEAR LEADER FOR MAKING ME ABLE TO SEE YOUR WONDERFUL FACE...

actually i agree lol. Korean war was a mistake for China. China was ass poor after WW2, went into huge debt (soviet "aids" weren't free) and sent half million Chinese troops to die in a foreign country to keep a dictator in power. It makes no sense looking back.
