Most realistic portrayal of a soldier we'd call a "ninja" I've seen, illustrates how Japanese light infantry would've fought, it's not at all outside of historical boundaries to assume some of these mercenaries (specialising in night time siege shenanigans or just harrassing/Viet Cong type tactics) would have covered their faces, especially at times when it would be extremely politically incorrect to be associated with the "Men of Iga" or "Men of Koga."
He'd make a pretty badass light infantry type unit for Iga/Koga.
As you can see, he's basically armoured as a classic ashigaru type, but his role is different.
