    Default Monarchy in the UK

Do you think that the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the crowning of Prince Charles will affect the standing of the institution in the UK and Commonwealth countries?

By this I mean Charles isn't really as popular as Elizabeth and Canada and Austrailia already have sizable republican movements. However, I am really interested in how it would affect the UK. Would it result in growing republican support or even the abolishment of the monarchy? I know that the Monarchy is very strong in the UK with little support for their removal but how would a drastic change, like the crowning of Prince Charles, affect that?

    What's your opinion?

I don't really like our Monarchy, to much of a waste of millions of pounds, the tourist attraction is the best thing that they do

    You know, not even that.
Me and my lovely lady visited UK last weekend (thursday to sunday)...

British museum was impressive, loved the Natural Science museum.
Along with Piccadilly and Covent Garden.
Didn't have patience to queue for London Dungeon.

    Never even saw Buckingham palace.

You Britons overestimate effect of your crownheads as source of tourist money.

Right, that same Monarchy that pays tens of millions more into the Treasury than it takes out?

The Monarch does not interfere with the democratic process.

Queen Elizabeth was, however, instrumental in arranging things like the Repatriation of the Canadian Constitution in 1982 -- she was Queen of Canada -- and maintains regular correspondence with the Prime Minister, and getting together a government at a number of times.

I always supported the monarchy )
I think it should remain there
After all it is vital to the UK's political system
A republic would need all that stuff like a constitution (codified) etc... why bother?

I don't suppose it will really change, in the past we've had mad, bad and crazy monarchs and we've got past it. Reublicanism is'nt even on the political radar in the UK, I mean we chopped off the first King Charle's head and still brought his son back to reign.

I personally support the monarchy as an institution, even if I'm not too keen on every member of the Royal family, for me its a part of who we are as a nation/state. As for the money they cost, its meaningless in the grand scheme of things, none of us would notice any difference in our lifestyles if the crown was abolished. More of my tax this year has probably gone to the greedy bastard banks, than it has to the monarchy over the last 10 years.

As for Canada or Oz, well thats up to them, they're independant nations, they will choose their own way.

Besides, if the Queen lasts as long as her mother, theres a chance she could outlive Charlie.

    I second this statement.

The uk is the only western county with a constitutional monarchy left, don't ruin the uniqueness of your country by taking that away!

So the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Spain don't exist, I suppose?

OT: I support the institution of monarchy. 'Tis one of the reasons Canada and Britain are among the few countries I would ever think of leaving the United States for. To me, monarch is one of the best categories of governing systems, and in particular the parliamentary constitutional monarchies are among the most stable, democratic, and prosperous countries in the world right now.

Yes, because Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Louxembourg, Monaco and all those country I've forgotten are hardly western.

Yeah pretty much what Yorkshireman said it's part of our identity now even if it is a bit outdated. Sort of like how the US constitution seems to be revered to an almost unhealthy extent (i mean the founding fathers were brilliant and all but they weren't godlike beings).

As for the ex empire nations such as Canada and Australia well it is up to them but i would be kinda sad to see them break royal ties with us i mean it's not like they have a huge impact on the countries policies and it's nice to have a unified cultural link with countries across a 1000 miles of ocean.

Our constitution is broken just about every day by our government; and the institution that was set up to protect that from happening has failed to do anything about it.

Aside from that; I think Britain should retain its king, and sign all official documents "God save King Charles!"

    LOL

    That blog has such stories as these;

Recently, I was walking in a park near my home, enjoying the brisk air of a Canadian winter, and the exquisite beauty of a snow-covered landscape. It was evening and the setting sun stained the white snow with shades of crimson and gold. There wasn't a sound to be had, all was quiet and beautiful, truly serene. But then I did hear something, sounds like shouting and struggling. Naturally concerned, I followed the sounds to behind a small grove of trees, where I saw another young man attempting to force himself upon a young woman, who was against a fence. She naturally took objection to this, and was struggling to push him away, but with his greater strength and size he was easily winning the struggle. I consider myself to be a gentleman, and a gentleman could not stand by and allow this to happen. Moving quickly, I set a hand on the man's shoulder and pulled him away.

"Sir, I don't believe the lady wants your company this evening," I said. The young man shouted a curse word, then drew back and struck me across the jaw, whereupon I struck him back and sent him sprawling onto the cold snowy ground. He looked up at me with anger, pain, and perhaps more than a bit of drunkenness in his eyes, decided that it was not worth the effort, and scrambled off. I then turned to the young woman to see if she was alright.

"Are you okay, miss?" I asked. She did not answer me. Instead she drew a can of pepperspray from her purse and sprayed me with it, shouting "CREEP!" loudly. She then quickly and sharply raised her knee into my reproductive organs, and ran off, leaving me doubled over from the pain which was, i'm sure you know, quite excrutiating.

    ...and it goes on....
The writing style just cracks me up...

The monarchy won't be abolished in the UK. Nobody complained when Victoria died and Edward VII became King.

Well, Charles is a bit of a wingnut, a fuddy-duddy and a complete bore. But that's what monarchy is all about - it's a hereditary deal. I don't think the monarchy itself should be overthrown because one monarch is unpopular; maybe the monarch himself pressured to abdicate or whatever.

Besides, knowing the UK newspapers for what they are, they'd have a complete ball lampooning King Charlie.

Charles is not a fuddy-duddy! He's the best Prince we've had in a long while. I hope to God that by some miracle he outlives his two sons.
