Default Campaign Map/Battle performance, is.... crap!

    Hi there!

This game seem to run like garbage on my system, Medieval 2 Total War ran fine if not excellent all on highest with 1680x1050 resolution.

Ive got around 20 fps in the Campaign Map, and drops even more when zooming in/out. Graphical glitches at times aswell (textures seem to grow together at times)

Sea Battle: I get around 15-25 fps (really rare that i get above 20 though) no matter what settings i turn on, low, medium, high or ultra.
Also changed settings on Shader from 3.0 high to low, aswell as turn off shadows and such.

Land Battles: I get around 15-25 fps there aswell, same as above, doesnt matter what settings i use.

Oh and, Campaign map really cause my CPU to run hot, when the battles do not.. Weird!

    Code:

    Specs:
Windows Vista X64 Service Pack 1.
    Nvidia GeForce 8800GT (G92) 512MB -Standard clock.
    AMD Phenom X4 9750 2,4GHz AM2+ -Standard clock.
    Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3 Rev 1 AM2+
    Corsair 3072MB XMS2-6400 800MHz DDR2 (3 sticks)
    Sweex 650W Powersupply

    Monitor - BenQ G2400W 1920x1200.
    Code:

    Settings in the game:
    Resolution: 1440x900
    Grass: Medium.
    Trees: Medium.
    Shadows: Medium.
    Unit Detail: Medium.
    Ship Detail: Medium.
    BUilding Detail: Medium.
    Ocean: High.
    Sky: Medium.
    Texture: High/Medium.
    Filtering: Trilinear.
    Anti-Aliasing: Off.
Shader: 3.0 Low (Had high before)
    Vsync: Off.
    Windowed mode: Off.

    Heat Haze: On.
HDR: On (no difference on Off)
SSAO: Off. (Basically kills the GPU)
Volumetric Fog: Off/On, (didnt see any difference either)
    Hardware Shadows: Off.
I dont know if i forgot anything either so.

I ran Medieval 2 Total War w. Kingdoms (All highest with 1680x1050 res) and 1920x1200 I think on the campaign map (you had separate settings for those) with no problems whatsoever.. same goes for many other games including GTA IV. (Though its CPU dependant?)

Turning game settings isn't the problem nor is it "overheating of cpu, video card, etc." The game has a serious number of graphical bugs that need to be addressed by a patch.

I have very similar specs to you. Your power supply is right on the edge for your setup. 8800's are very power hungry, that's why they run so hot.

I run at Ultra settings, but I had to turn Shadows off, and update my driver to 185.20 from guru 3d. Campaign map FPS is around 20 for me, but battles stay at 40-60.

He is running a G92, your running a G90 (which does indeed run hotter and require more power).

G92 is built on the 65nm, so it uses less power and due to that less heat, thus is why its a single slot cooler instead of the g90s dual.

Yes try the 185.20s, they solved my problems.

Thanks for the info, I learn something new every day. That heat was a huge issue for me till I bought a case designed for it.

My GPU isnt hot, its my CPU!
And 550W is enough for the rig, (had 550w before i upped it with the 650w one)

These drivers from Nvidia were released the day before ETW, and CA have stated that they may be causing problems and suggest you use the previous set (182.06 I believe), in this thread:

I'm even using an older one - 182.05 - but still get crappy performance and the famous ugly shadows on horses and sometimes even people.

So what's next? They tell me they also haven't tested this driver?

Use the Beta driver (google Nvidia 185.20 guru3d YourOS-Here)
I now play it all on High, shadows medium. 1440x900 res, 30+ fps constantly, except when zooming in/out at times it can drop a bit.

I usually don't use non-Nvidia-released beta drivers. Are you using it with a GTX 260? Can you tell me if the card clocks down in idle? And how big is the difference between this driver and the one before on your machine? How was the performance before?

    /edit: Wait....this driver id old....veeeeery old: http://downloads.guru3d.com/GeForce-...load-2156.html O_o

Ok. Thanks, but why are they from January 2009? While 182.08 is from March 3 2009?

Gonna install them, hopefully my monitor dont give me the 'No signal' message as i always get in vista when updating the nvidia driver (using DVI) so i dont have to change cables again! :hmmm:

Guru gets them first to be beta tested for nvidia, before they put them on their own site. The ones on nvidia.com are always "out of date" compared to Guru3d.
