    Default Empire FAQ

The Q&A thread is a bit of a mess with threads constantly getting merged into it. I thought i'd post this and make it easier to see the answers to the questions rather than trawl the thread or have people start new ones.

If you've anything to add please post it and i'll update the first post with it. Also if i've made mistake please pick me up on it. I'd like this to be as accurate as possible.

    Q
: Ships on the trade lanes are flashing between their nations flag and the pirate skull and cross bones.
A: They are privateers raiding the trade routes of their enemies.

    Q: How do I recruit rakes/gentlemen/missionaries?
A: They will spawn automatically if you have the correct buildings. Upgrading these buildings increases the max number you can have. They can be a little slow to spawn so be patient.

Q: What do the grey bars next to my town mean?
A: They represent the militia force that will be spawned if the settlement is attacked. There's still a max of 20 units in the settlement at once though and when that level is reached, each new regular unit replaces one of the militia (they return if you removce the regular unit).

Q:What do the icons above your ship represent?
A:The white bar represents the status of your sails, the green bars the integrity of your hull.

Q: I've researched rank fire and it's not appearing as an option in my units abilities.
A: That's correct. Units who can use this will use it automatically.

Q:Is the US playable in the Grand Campaign.
A:No it's only playable through the Road To Independence mini campaign. However the last part of RTI gives you control of America and access to the whole world so it's much the same thing. You just can't play from them from 1700 as you can the other 11 playable factions.

Q:How do i change my government type?
A:You have to have a revolution and take the side of the revolutionaries.

Q: Does defeating a nation unlock them to be played in the Grand Campaign?
    A: No.

Q: What are the effects of having a nation as a protectorate?
A: You get 50% of their tax income, full military access to their territory, the ability to see what they can see including their trade routes and they will automatically support you in any wars

Q: What factions are playable in the Grand Campaign?
    A: Britain
    France
    Spain
    Prussia
    Sweden
    Austria
    Poland
    Russia
    Ottoman Empire
    Marathas
    United Provinces
    (thanks HornetThrower)

Q:My/an enemy ship is stuck on a trade square, what do i do?
A: This is a bug, so far the only way to solve it is to scuttle the ship or attack it if it's an enemy. The bug appears to occur when you split a fleet that's on a trade square so it's best to move the whole fleet off before splitting them up.

Q: Can i change my nations religion?
    A: No.

Q: How can I speed up research and can I research several projects at once?
A: Develop your schools into universities and place gentlemen in them to quicken research. Several gentlemen add to the bonus in one school/university.
Yes you can research several projects at once, if you have more than one school/university: go to your reseach screen and on the upper display you will have all your research centers listed. Click on each of them to choose a project.

Q: What does the yellow coin, upper right hand corner of a ship card, mean?
A: This indicates a trade ship, which can be used to establish a trade lane by placing it on a trade square (the yellow circle with an anchor) in one of the four trading regions.

Q:Where are the trading regions and how do I get to them?
A:The trading regions are: Brazil, The Ivory coast, Madagascar and the East Indies. You get to them by sailing to transition zones and clicking on the one you wish to travel to. You can view these regions by clicking on the globe in the UI (next to the minimap) and clicking on one of the 4 golden circles that represent the regions.

Q: What influences how many trade lanes I can have, land + sea?
A: You can have land trade with all of your adjacent neighbours.
Sea trade lanes are influenced by the trade ports in only your home region. (this answer is uncomfirmed and incomplete, any further info would be appreciated)
(Thanks to G. Seimore and Talroth)

Q: How do i change my capital city?
A: There's currently no option to do so.

Q: How do I turn off the City labels/flags on the campaign map?
A: For the city info banner toggle it be hitting "Ctrl-T" for the flags hit "J"

Q: How can I build field fortifications?
A: If you don't use any movement points in a turn your army will be able to use fortifications if they're attacked. You can see whether they're able to by looking at them on the campaign map. If they've a ring of stakes round them they can build fortifications.
To build them; click on a unit in the deployment phase of the battle and select the object you wish to build from the menu that pops up.

Sea trade lanes are influenced by your highest develloped trade port. Meaning you can only have as many sea trade lanes as your most advanced trade port. It does not matter how many trade ports you own.

    More to come

Are you sure about that? In my current game it seems to be your trade routes are based on the number of Trade Ports in your Home Province, where your capital is based. But I've also noticed trade lanes going to nearby trade ports in Denmark, not my home province of Sweden. The number of trade lanes the diplomacy screen is saying I could have matched the number of lanes offered by the two ports I had in my home.

I could be wrong, but I think its however many trade routes (through trade ports) you have in your home region AND any that are connected by land to said home region.

Some of my cities have only two buildings (governement and walls) slot while other have four or five. Why, or how do I get more buidling slots in my cities with only two?

    I'd forgotten about this.
Unfortunately it seems that you can't upgrade your cities, they're designated as 2, 3, 4 or 5 slot cities before the game starts and stay that way no matter what. Pop doesn't seem to affect them.

I'm sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but I've not been able to figure out the answer:

How do I take ingame screenshots and where are they saved? The game's manual, and ingame Hotkey lists don't mention a "Capture Screen Shot" button. I tried pressing "Print Screen" and F12, expecting to see a popup saying that a shot has been saved, but nothing happened.
My named ships in Empire Total War: (that i can remember)

    Fifth Rate, HMS Poseidon.

    Fifth Rate, HMS Dauntless.

    Fifth Rate, HMS Enterprise NCC-1701

    Fifth Rate, HMS Simi.

If you are using Steam then you can take screenshots using F12. The screenshots are then saved as images automatically and stored on your pc in one of the steam folders (can't remember which one). The screenshots can also be viewed though steam as well as by seaching through your folders and these can be uploaded to steam and shared.

alternatively press Print Screen on your keyboard (normally next to Scroll Lock and near to F12), paste the images into paint/Gimp/photoshop etc and save.

If using Windows 7, printscreen seems to work differently (at least for me) so you can get specific screen caputue software to do the same job. To find one just do a google search to see which one is recommended by other users and download (at your own risk).

when using F12 there is normally a popup in the top right corner confirming the screenshot has been taken, if this is not showing, you may need to check your settings to make sure that the screenshot function hasn't been disabled or notification of it hasn't been disabled. The easiest way to check if the screenshots have been taken is to go into steam and click View and then select screenshots.

Proud supporter of Crystal Palace Football Club since I randomly picked them from a football wall chart while sitting in a caravan, on holiday at Presthaven Sands in North Wales in 1991.

    Other Clubs I like:
Local - Matlock Town & Chesterfield
UK - Blackpool, Nottingham Forest & Liverpool
Europe - Paris Saint Germain & Sampdoria
    National Team - England
If England get knocked out - Japan then Italy

Is there any way to change the font of the in-game text to a larger size? My poor eyes are having trouble reading a lot of the small text.

A mod should sticky this thread so it doesn't get forgotten.

Question: As GB, I keep trying to attack Georgia, but the Ottomans have the Bosporus completely blocked!
Answer: First of all, wrong Georgia. Georgia the state, north of Florida, not Georgia the country, in the Caucasus. I can't believe I actually made that mistake. Spent 2 years ingame trying to go through the strait without annoying the Turks.
If you do need to get through the Bosporus, it can be very hard, as, even if you don't get intercepted, a single fleet in the right place can block all passage through. If that happens, try getting military access, and march through Anatolia, or through Thrace to get wherever. Or, just attack the fleets, and fight your way through.

I still can't believe I made that mistake at first.
