The Q&A thread is a bit of a mess with threads constantly getting merged into it. I thought i'd post this and make it easier to see the answers to the questions rather than trawl the thread or have people start new ones.
If you've anything to add please post it and i'll update the first post with it. Also if i've made mistake please pick me up on it. I'd like this to be as accurate as possible.
Q: Ships on the trade lanes are flashing between their nations flag and the pirate skull and cross bones.
A: They are privateers raiding the trade routes of their enemies.
Q: How do I recruit rakes/gentlemen/missionaries?
A: They will spawn automatically if you have the correct buildings. Upgrading these buildings increases the max number you can have. They can be a little slow to spawn so be patient.
Q: What do the grey bars next to my town mean?
A: They represent the militia force that will be spawned if the settlement is attacked. There's still a max of 20 units in the settlement at once though and when that level is reached, each new regular unit replaces one of the militia (they return if you removce the regular unit).
Q:What do the icons above your ship represent?
A:The white bar represents the status of your sails, the green bars the integrity of your hull.
Q: I've researched rank fire and it's not appearing as an option in my units abilities.
A: That's correct. Units who can use this will use it automatically.
Q:Is the US playable in the Grand Campaign.
A:No it's only playable through the Road To Independence mini campaign. However the last part of RTI gives you control of America and access to the whole world so it's much the same thing. You just can't play from them from 1700 as you can the other 11 playable factions.
Q:How do i change my government type?
A:You have to have a revolution and take the side of the revolutionaries.
Q: Does defeating a nation unlock them to be played in the Grand Campaign?
A: No.
Q: What are the effects of having a nation as a protectorate?
A: You get 50% of their tax income, full military access to their territory, the ability to see what they can see including their trade routes and they will automatically support you in any wars
Q: What factions are playable in the Grand Campaign?
A: Britain
France
Spain
Prussia
Sweden
Austria
Poland
Russia
Ottoman Empire
Marathas
United Provinces

Q:My/an enemy ship is stuck on a trade square, what do i do?
A: This is a bug, so far the only way to solve it is to scuttle the ship or attack it if it's an enemy. The bug appears to occur when you split a fleet that's on a trade square so it's best to move the whole fleet off before splitting them up.
Q: Can i change my nations religion?
A: No.
Q: How can I speed up research and can I research several projects at once?
A: Develop your schools into universities and place gentlemen in them to quicken research. Several gentlemen add to the bonus in one school/university.
Yes you can research several projects at once, if you have more than one school/university: go to your reseach screen and on the upper display you will have all your research centers listed. Click on each of them to choose a project.
Q: What does the yellow coin, upper right hand corner of a ship card, mean?
A: This indicates a trade ship, which can be used to establish a trade lane by placing it on a trade square (the yellow circle with an anchor) in one of the four trading regions.
Q:Where are the trading regions and how do I get to them?
A:The trading regions are: Brazil, The Ivory coast, Madagascar and the East Indies. You get to them by sailing to transition zones and clicking on the one you wish to travel to. You can view these regions by clicking on the globe in the UI (next to the minimap) and clicking on one of the 4 golden circles that represent the regions.
Q: What influences how many trade lanes I can have, land + sea?
A: You can have land trade with all of your adjacent neighbours.
Sea trade lanes are influenced by the trade ports in only your home region. (this answer is uncomfirmed and incomplete, any further info would be appreciated)
(Thanks to G. Seimore and Talroth)
Q: How do i change my capital city?
A: There's currently no option to do so.
Q: How do I turn off the City labels/flags on the campaign map?
A: For the city info banner toggle it be hitting "Ctrl-T" for the flags hit "J"
Q: How can I build field fortifications?
A: If you don't use any movement points in a turn your army will be able to use fortifications if they're attacked. You can see whether they're able to by looking at them on the campaign map. If they've a ring of stakes round them they can build fortifications.
To build them; click on a unit in the deployment phase of the battle and select the object you wish to build from the menu that pops up.
