    Hello All,

I've noticed that many players prefer to just wipe out an opposing faction entirely, but I was curious as to how many SS players actually prefer to vassal their foe?

I would argue strongly for making an enemy faction your vassal, for two reasons. Firstly, the improved AI ensures that you won't get back stabbed, as long as you keep your relations up. Therefore, having a few vassals greatly improves your expansion and economy, by not having to worry about managing far off and highly corrupt settlements. The second plus, however, is the greatest. I have found in SS, that many factions stock up a huge treasury. And by sparing your foe, you can get that money. In a recent campaign, I made the Moors, Leon-Castille and Portugal my vassals, and ended up with a half a million florin treasury. Not to shabby, eh?

    They've never accepted. :/

I also never had someone accepting a vassalage offer. But sacking enemy settlements yields a lot of money, too.

The only vassalage I have ever had accepted was Denmark when I was playing as Novgorod. They broke it about 2 turns later so I wiped them out for their insolence.

Hmm.. That's odd! I normally just bring the opposing faction down to a single territory, and annihilate most of their army. After you do that, getting a vassalage is easy pickings. A good indicator that a faction is prepared to be your undying servants is when they find a ceasefire "generous"

I see. But what I don't quite get is what's the reasoning behind leaving this one-territory-enemy alive; just to have him potentially backstab you in the future? A rich faction might certainly offer you a lot of money, but not every faction is rich - especially after a war of attrition.
And the one territory you virtually give away would yield some cash, too. I don't really see the advantage, honestly.:hmmm:

I prefer attempting to relocate such enemies as a buffer to other hostile nations rather than wipe them out. Once your treasure is overflowing with cash diplomacy becomes a lot easier.

I felt the same here, currently in my English VH/VH 6.2, I vassalled Denmark, Aragon, and just after a crusade in middle-east, now yr is 1290, and I am sailing back to England(with my longbowmen) for the beginning of "the 1st scotish independance war" and prepare to be challenge by William Wallace(I altered the file for him for later apprearance according to wiki). My plan? Vassal Scot and Ireland this time, and if possible, marry my daugther with william wallace and turn him against Scotland(and French later on).

So long story short, I do think vassalage adds depth to the game, and normally they wont backstab you, and yes, they will bring alot of money to your chest(once they have left over in their own treasury). And in order to made that happen, I found alot of time I left them with two settlements, they tend to generate cash faster(well, city preferred at least for one of the settlement).

Yep, that's the trick, you have to beat them down to one settlement. It doesn't always work, but for the most part.

Interesting! Thanks for the replies! I was very curious on what some other members, who use this mod, think of vassalage.

first i didn't know how i get vassals so i whiped them out
but now i do i wil try to get as many as possible
also gonna try to relocate them just for fun ^^

egypt vassaled Templars was the most surprising so far
then Novgorod made lithuania vassal so i must have vassals too!

gonna try cumans, Teutons and mongols who are very close to me (kwarezmian) how cool would it be to have teutons and mongols as you vassal then relocate them elswhere

last campaign i had the 3 italian states as vasals (as the romans), my playstyle was really agrresive, sicilians gave me 40k after the first turn, 20k next, and it continues in that pattern, the venetians gave a lot less, and the genoese gave about 20k after the first turn, all of them relocated to hold of a number of enemies, venice = hre, genoa = the iberians, and sicily = egypt. all that extra income helped me maintain up to 12 full stacks

current campaign is a little different, still as the romans, but more passive (turtle) and the moors have all 3 iberian states as vassals which is kind scary, theyre #1 in both financial (over 400k mark in the factions list) and military, good thing is theyre quite far from me to be any threat, my main concern atm is egypt, whove killed off the templars and own the lower half of anatolia, plus the fact that im at the recieving end of a jihad xD

Having a vassal might be rewarding from a roleplaying point if view, but in all other aspects it is better to own the territory than to have it in vassalage (more income, you can build stuff there, more settlements cause more prospective generals to be born/adopted/offered in marriage, etc.

Depending on your economy it is sometimes wise to force someone to be a vassal.

Hmm... But if you have a vassal, you get a percentage of his income. If you own his territories, you get all the income.

I am curious do we get any of the money AI factions get through the money script when they are made vassals?
