I'm sure there's noone alive who remembers 20 years ago, anyway.
Why should Russia intervene? I see no reason for that.
No,they wouldn't be of any use to NATO,considering how they withdrew with their tails between their legs after a failed war there in the 1980s.

It had little to do with collpace of USSR. In fact, USSR could stay there longer, it was purely Gorbachev's decision to leave Afganistan.
And Americans had to withdrew by leaving Saigon after their defeat in Vietnam.you had to withdraw back across the Amu Darya to Termez after the defeat.
Back on topic:
Russia doesn't need to enter Afghanistan and help NATO for now.
What Russia needs to do is to block alll the heroin coming from there.

^^Well we need all the help we can get and it would be a big step forward for US/Russian relations. Why should Russia intervene? I see no reason for that.
But I don't really think it would be that good an idea as things are still tense between Russia and the US/Europe

No, i believe it would just add to the taliban's "freedom fighter" image. Old invaders return. Seriously the propaganda value they would gain by saying "see! the commies are back! and in league with the US!"
Not to mention Russian forces would not add much to the fight.

When Dutch soldiers first operated in Northern Afghanistan, some locals thought they were Russians.
I guess nobody told them the war with Russia ended in 1988.
(though to be fair, the new Russian flag does look a lot like the Dutch flag so that's probably what caused the confusion).
About (real) Russians partaking in Afghanistan: I think that would be a little painful on both sides.
Is there any purpose to this thread? Are the Russians in discussion with NATO? Are they considering to participate? Answer -- NO!!!
This thread strikes me as a waste of time and perhaps a bit trollish.
