Obama 'to reverse stem cell ban'

US President Barack Obama will lift restrictions on federal funding for research on new stem cell lines, officials have said.
He will authorise the move by executive order on Monday, according to reports.
President George W Bush blocked the use of any government money to fund research on human embryonic stem cell lines created after 9 August 2001.
Scientists say stem cell research will lead to medical breakthroughs, but many religious groups oppose the research.
this should be cause for cheer all around the world. i know im gonna get absolutely plastered tonite, hell my liver can take it. if not im sure in 10 years a treatment for liver abuse will be around now

considering the most recent breakthrough, involving the transformation of skin cells into stem cells, (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...y/Science/home thanks canada)
do you still oppose medical research on stem cells?
is your opposition based on religious preferences?
if no, could you explain your opinion?

Keep personal morality out of government. This research will save a lot of lives. It's too bad we didn't start it sooner and listened to Christopher Reeve.

I mean there is a potential cure here for paralysis, growing organs and tissue, and possibly a lot of genetic diseases including diabetes. We experiment on animals, I don't think we should have double standards.

Hurray for science. Modern medicine will get a massive boost from this. Can't wait to see what discoveries we're gonna be seeing in the coming years.
I have approximate answers and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I’m not absolutely sure of anything, and many things I don’t know anything about. But I don’t have to know an answer. I don’t feel frightened by not knowing.

i think wishing anyone to rot in hell is somewhat unchristianly, but ok. surely , if this decision he made led to a treatment that saved the life of or removed a disability/ailment/disease from someone you loved and held dear, would you still hold your predjudice against him because he supports the moderate use of abortion?

Most people only oppose stem cell research from embryo cells. I oppose the fact that people still think that stem cells are some kind of magic bullet that with funding *poof* everything can be cured within a decade. Most people also seem to think its only been going on for about 10-15 years when its actually been going on for about 50 years. Embryonic stems cells have also never even been used in a clinical trial yet, while adult stem cells are already used in various treatments. While I think stem cell research is a good thing, I certainly don't have the blind optimism that a lot of people do.

Hunter, there's always a chance that research won't turn anything up conclusive. It's the fact that we are doing it is important. Otherwise we might as well just see all disease as god's will. I would gladly sacrifice tax dollars for this cause. One of the few I really do agree with.

What I'm pointing out is that fact that everyone seems to think that stem cells are this brand new thing and if it wasn't for evil Bush we wouldn't have paraplegics. Obviously there is hope, and there has been progress, but again this is something that has been going on since the early 60's, and studied even before that. There's also this misconception that research was totally banned here, and also that we are the only people in the world with stem cells. Its not like the whole time this ban was in effect there wasn't research still going on. Just like you can't flip a switch on global warming you can't flip a switch on this. Anyone who thinks that there's gonna be some magical breakthrough if the ban is lifted doesn't really have any idea about what they are supporting.

One more blow struck against the beard-strokers in the ultimate smackdown for justice that is the presidential administration of Barack "the Man" Obama. Sock it to those religious freaks and right-wing nutjobs, B.

I was unaware of stem cell research BAN. Bush cut federal funding to it, nothing more, nothing less. Now me being a government can pay for it before they run it kind of guy, I wasn't too happy with that policy. However there was no ban and plenty of research was done on the subject, infact we found we can kill two birds with one stone, we can restore the fed funding while research no longer comes from fetuses.
Sure I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is Im not. I honestly feel that America is the best country and all other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.
