Zeal is decided by your faction's size compared to others.

So the more provinces i take the lower the zeal, which means larger kingdoms are unable to recruite elite units!?

Unable to recruit em? No. But only war council members will be able to do so once your zeal drops too low.

You can always try to disable Byg grim's reality if you dislike the additions it makes.

Nah i think its interesting but i need to understand its basics first, as i was expanding my Byzantine empire rapidly i just couldnt understand why i could not recruit the better units, they were in the unit rooster but was greyed out.
And as i understand now if u are the biggest faction ur king and princes will also have low zea, while the smallest will get a high zeal.

There is a guide to Byg's Grim Reality to download at the bottom of the Byg's mod thread in the submods forum.

you really need to, the depth byg grim reality adds to the game comes at a price, u should really know what you're doing,or else...

when your faction gets bigger, good units can only be trained by war council members, until only the king and his heir (if he's a war council member) will be able to recruit them.

you'll also find that the generals quality gets low as your empire grows bigger.

Ive also noticed that u cant stay too long on the road with ur general, so how would this work when ur going on a crusade as England or France to Jerusalem?

I believe that there is a speed bonus when on crusade, also if in a ship you don't lose supplies as fast if at all (I forget the specifics)

Actually you can get resupplied when your army stays in a fleet. The supply system is interesting, make a large expedition a tricky thing to manage.
