Default Top 3 regions to colonize?

When sending your troops out of the old world to start a colony in the great beyond, what 3 regions do you aim for?

What do you favor the most? :hmmm:

    riches?

tactical placement? (cluster your 3 regions?)

pleasant natives? (meaning-you can blast the few of them away, before they can club you a new face)

What is your best advice to someone who whants to "place" armed population to someplace else on the populated maps?

And what does your "meet&greet the neighbours" army consist of?

i like Florida personally. Spain lost control of it and the Cherokees took it, so i went in for the kill. there's plenty of possible towns, great tactical placement, and access to the sea.

The Pirate islands, excellent location, weak garrison, already at war.

yeah, they are only lightly defended but the problem is that they start out with very little towns and the growth isnt that spectacular...66 turns after i took tripoli...

Barbary states provide you with extra Mediterranean seaports.

true, however if you want those areas to develop you either have to make 'em tradeports or fisherys. that allows you to reinforce but you cant recruit there. also in some of my games the AI just blocks straits of gibraltar making it impossible to move any fleet in or out of the Mediterranean...

It all depends on what country you're playing as. If you're playing the British, focus on N. America first.

If you're playing the Spanish, go with South America. I prefer the Americas, personally. But once I take the Caribbean and the Americas, I go for India.

This may have already been mentioned, but doing so would sling you into war with the Ottoman's. Otherwise they are certainly worth it- North Africa isn't exactly rich, but it does give you an easy way to dominate the Mediterranean.

Since they are already at war from the start of the game, I don't think the Ottos automatically jump to their side. Never happened in my campaigns at least...

Pirate Island...I found that one. On paper invading that one seems tactical...but...pirates have boats...lots of them, I found out hehe
I see now that I neglected upgrading my navy...well well

the pirates are long dead in my game, but i have third rate monstrosities sitting around just in case they want to play again.

I can reccomend Ducth and French Guyana (and in India Ceylon), both are rich on villages, and gold/gem mines, it's a money-maker!

As for strategy, i like taking islands in the theatres first, thus not having to build up a great land force to defend them, but use my fleet instead ;-)

I took the advice to invade india, picked the lonely civ down the edge on the left side (forgot their name), only to find them having at least 3 full stacks waiting for my one stack consisting of 1general 2 riders 1 canon and rest line infantery....
...surprisenly I survived a two stack attack and am now seiging their city containing of a half stack irritated natives...and another full stack of angry indians looming close by.
My pale swedish soldiers are severly decimated and if the natives don´t kill them, dysentry will.

Now I really miss the function of buying mercaneries.....
I used the replenish unit button...but...really...are there going to come reinforcements all the way from Sweden to India? :hmmm:

    Plague stalks the land?

Dysenteri, small-pox, malaria, VD etc. Somehow all the amusing diseases are left out of Empire which is a big shame.

Regarding starting regions in the new lands, I tend to go for the areas closest to warp areas. On that note, Iceland is a really cool place to build navies, since it only takes them one round to go to America.

I never take both the two pirate provinces as a House Rule.
