does anyone know how i can edit them as to make some of the elite native units less powerful?
when fighting versus them you seem to always get lower FPS thab say a full stack prussian army..(Missing sprites?)

to catch a fish,so juicy sweeeeeet
Use bullets
And cannons!!
You guys are thinking small.
I was playing the RTI compaing on h/h and i think the natives are a bunch of shandy drinking softies. They even loose in melee against my cheap mililtia units.
You think when it comes to hand to hand combat the natives would own, instead of retreating faster then the french after 10secs.

Well one thing that annoys me much about them is how they always go straight in with melee troops. Sometimes I even auto resolve such battles, but then it actually turns out that when the AI auto resolves my battles with the native americans, I loose far fewer men?? What kind of trick is the AI using?
The natives aren't overpowered at all.
Europeans have ARTILLERY. Cannons are perhaps the most powerful unit in the game. Ever try grape shot? (Canister round). Time it right and it'll wipe out an entire company.
Plus, natives helped the Canadians fend off an American invasion, and the Americans outnumbered them 5:1. So really, they aren't overpowered, you just need to readjust your strategies.
Natives don't fight European style, so you have to change your tactics too. Line infantry should have bayonets and square formation to defend against cavalry charges, and get some quality skirmishers like rangers. Also, cavalry is especially good vs natives, when they run for a melee, just flank charge them.
Also, when you have your battle line, and the natives advance, make sure to HOLD fire. Unclick fire at will. When they get close (but not too close, I suggest halfway within firing range, click fire at will) typically it's a pretty huge volley that wipes out 1/4 of them, if not more. Especially if you are only 2 lines deep.
Actually they are overpowered right at the start of the game because you dont have the techs to deal with them properly.
Their strength lies in their high morale and awsome speed. And with relatively low upkeep they will come en masse. The thing to watch out for most is being spread out too much with the core of your army, as both their cavalry and infantry are so fast they will take you down piece by piece unless you stay in close formations.
Their lancers, their elite axemen and their bowmen are all very annoying opponents, so whoever things they are a breeze probably got lucky once and thinks he's napoleon.
Research gravel shot for the artillery and the higher level bayonets for your infantry before taking them on.
You can probably do it without the techs but expect to take plenty of casualties as they wont give up without a fight because of their high morale.
Some other notes:
-Light cavalry works wonders against the natives because you can outrun (barely) their infantry until they are exhausted then charge them down.
-Routing peasants and bowmen first will make sure you can group up on the difficult opponents like medicinemen.
-On defence, use an agressive force of cavalry to pick their lancers apart one at a time, as they usually spread out all over the map.
-Watch your back!
They close my modication thread DWWTW ='( please help evryone.
