Found it! and it doesn't work

You can force Vsync by right clicking the ATI symbol by the clock then navigate to 3d settings then wait for vertical refresh.

Ah. So not actually in the control centre. How counter-intuitive.

Indeed. Just out of curiosity, who was it who said the ATI V-Sync control is in the "control center"? You may want to re-read my post more carefully...?

I applied the binkw32.dll fix to a startup problem that was plaguing me -- the intro movie won't play and the program kicks me back to the desktop but keeps running in the background. I can't actually play, since the game mostly just reverts to the toolbar.

I used the bink replacement. The game worked for a few days. It stopped working, almost as if the program had reset, after a reboot (but not the first after I applied the bink replacement).

Any suggestions?

I got the same problem as the last 4 guys, I put the bink ( I used the .zip) in the folder and it over writes the old one, but when you try to launch Empire it won,t start.
And if you switch back to the old one it will launch. Man why the hell don,t they fix this? The communtiy finds out whats wrong in 10 minutes.

Bump. Had the sound problem with the demo too and foolishly though "Oh I'm sure they've fixed it with patches by now"

Tried both the replacement binkw32 files, no joy. Steam refuses to run E:TW until I put the old dll back, or do a 'validate cached files' thingy. Interestingly, Steam states that 4 files have failed validation and have to be downloaded. I don't know if it's possible that running the game with this dll can break three other files.

I've also been having this problem since the last update. Previous versions of Empire worked just fine.

If the fix is no longer working, let's just hope that CA takes a good, hard look at this issue and fixes it before abandoning Empire to work on Shogun 2.

Just to update... I tried the older bink dll replacement and it worked perfectly for me. No need to have Forced V-Sync on anymore either, thanks again for posting it!

PS: I recently discovered that installing Nvidia driver version 182.06 (thanks to Tassen for the tip!) gave me MUCH better performance than any others (and I've tried them all, including the betas). Most noticably, in the campaign map. The text-tooltips now cause only a slight drop in fps to be almost unnoticable! At last! My eyes no longer hurt!

As soon as I drop in the attached bink file, ETW refuses to load. The Steam message flashes "preparing to load" and then disappears with no loading whatsoever. Did anyone else get this, and is there a way to get around it? I'd love to be able to hear the cinematics.

Same problem. If I replace bink with another one, game won't load at all.

Or could this be caused by a codec problem (as I understand, the intro movie uses BINK Video??)

Thanks for any pointers, even though it's only a small annoyance, I would like to know what causes this issue.

do you run vista ?? i noticed my into was stuttering ,untill i realised the patch i downloaded was still being processed by vista indexing service...if you do anything onm vista like move files /delete files /or install some software ..vista then goes into overdrive for a while it starts indexing everything....its the way vista works...i just wated 5 minutes then started the game now all is smooth............

I finally got the stupid thing to attach. Just download the attached file and rename it to .dll follow the fix instructions in this link. (it is not a text file I just had to name it that for the stupid forum to let me attach it)

i rename it on vista and it stays recognised as a text file - ETW then cant load.

what exactly should i do to rename it so that it gets recognised as the .dll?

You probably have to go to your folder options and uncheck "hide extensions for known file types".

Haven't tried this fix on vista not sure if it works or not I have XP

nah cant find any such option in vista (POS that it is)
