Default SL cricketers injured in terror attack

    http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/pakv...ry/393212.html

While there have been terror strikes on the peripheries of cricket, this is the first time players have been directly targeted. The Sri Lankans were on their way to the Gaddafi Stadium when their bus was attacked by five armed terrorists near Liberty market. Habibur Rehman, chief commissioner of police, said 12 masked terrorists fired at the Sri Lankan team bus. The gunmen shot at the wheels of the bus and also injured the driver. A grenade was also thrown at the bus but it missed. The others players injured are Ajantha Mendis, Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavitana

I know that there arent many cricket fans here but this is big news and this comes after India refused to let its cricketers tour Pakistan in the aftermath of the Mumbai attacks.

Being an Aussie who takes his cricket seriously I was just about to make a thread on this myself.

What a disgraceful act, this is just the absolute pits.

What a disgraceful act, this is just the absolute pits. I mean what has Sri Lanka ever done to Pakistan? Moronic downright evil bastards who don't give a about human life...all in the name of some stupid religion.

Thankfully Australia is playing in South Africa at the moment and not that turdhole Pakistan. Not that we or any other sporting nation will ever play there again. Stuff 'em.

    Barbarians.
I'm almost afraid to ask this, but what's cricket? :hmmm:

why the should SL give anything to the policeman's families. the PCB and Pakistan should give everyone money and that includes the Sri Lankan layers who are injured and wont be able to play in the IPL and lose money.

btw don't want to make it like I don't care about the policeman. sadly this is whats most likely to happen to a policeman in Pakistan.

English parents old boy, so not so barbarous here, even though I do live down under. Fighting crocodiles I'll leave to Pakistani Australians with more guts than me. As a Pakistani you yourself must be in despair the way the country has been going lately. I know it's far different from when friends of mine were able to hold discourse on the steps of the Mosque at Friday prayers regarding philosophy and comparative religion (back in the seventies).

BTW the barabarian comment was directed at the militants, not Pakistan as a whole.

Not really. It is all in the north. I'm comfortably in Karachi where these things don't happen and as long as MQM does it job of keeping Al Quidea and the Taliban out i'm happy with the way it is going. Pakistan has a fight ahead of it for sure, I'm not going to even deny that, but we are fighting the best we can. its our blood being shed, the prime example are thos dead secuirty guards and not Western or anyone elses blood.

The people will decide as a democracy. If the army comes then the army comes.

It's good to talk to someone from Pakistan right now....cools my anger at what happened and makes me think more carefully, instead of overreacting.

Why do think the bus was attacked? What could they hope to archive by such a negative act?

I mean, it's probably ruined the cricket for thousands of Pakistanis who like the game and want to watch their team thrash Sri Lanka, England or India at home (never Australia of course ;-)

And to see innocent people injured and killed over sport is just sickening.

This is like the Mumbai attacks in India. Obviously with less casualties and injuries but the goal was to get attention and destabilize the region. They knew that this would get attention and put Pakistan in a really bad place internationally.

Guys this is not going to turn into a nationalistic flamefest. I'm not going to hesitate to hand out infractions -- let's discuss the issue instead of attacking eachother.

    baseball got created from cricket.
    Baseball got created from rounders.

    not even, cricket owns baseball
    To each his own

But this is really terrible. There are awful people all over the world... regardless of where they're from or what God they worship.

Wow, I can say with certainty that the people who did this had nothing to do with Islam or Pakistan. What could be the motive behind this attack? What would any group claiming to defend Pakistan or Islam gain from this? What has Sri Lanka ever done to them?

Seriously, this is just another attempt at destabilizing Pakistan from within. What else could it be? How else do we perceive such mindless terrorism? In fact, this isn't even terrorism. Abhorrent as it is, terrorism can be summed up as "means to an end" but what's the "end" here? This is mindless barbarianism aimed not at Sri Lanka but Pakistan.

I'd like to express my sincere apology to the Sri Lankan people and I wish they come out of this attack stronger.

You are very right PMC. When I first heard it I thought 'what the hell do Pakistani militants have against Sri Lanka?' When millions of Pakistanis just love their cricket, it's a deliberate attempt to screw over the Pakistani people from within. What a ing disgrace.

What also sucks is that in all my dealings with Pakistanis in my life, as an Australian, cricket has always been a common thing we could discuss and share memories or thoughts over and share a bond. I'm sure many other foreigners from cricket-loving nations feel the same. Lets just make sure this doesn't effect the love for cricket in Pakistan, even if no internationals are played there for an extended period. Don't let the bastards win.

because india, australia and new zealand have all refused to tour because of security
A decision which has now, unfortunately, been vindicated.

its an awful thing to be vindicated like this. the previous attacks near cricket teams, especially last years were blamed on coincidence - the fact that cricket teams stay in the plush hotels which soft terrorist targets also stay in..

but there's no mistaking this one. it wasnt a random bomb in a posh part of the city, it was a deliberate attack on a major international sports team... if any of the sri lankan cricketers who've been rushed to hospital die, its going to sit up there alongside the munich olympics attack..
