    Default Papal States

Hi, I'm new to the board, and after browsing some of the threads I have a question.

How do I make the Papal States playable? I seem to recall trying it once, but if my memory serves me correctly, the game shut down on me.

    Can anyone help?

I don't think it's possible. At least in vanilla. (EDIT: It seems it is possible, read forward.) Maybe some mod out there allows you to play as them.

If you want a somewhat similar faction, you can play has Knights Templar in Stainless Steel. They also are a religious faction that starts with one city and focuses on crusades. You don't have any sort of extra influence with other catholic factions, though, if that's what you were looking for with the Papal States.

You can edit the playable / un-playable data file in the game. It's very easy to do, however playing as the Papal States can be a bit buggy.

And you can call crusades and excommunicate? I'm guessing not. Must be buggy indeed.

Calling crusades is the same as any other faction, and you can excommunicate them instantly when you go to war with them.

You still have to ask the Pope to call a crusade (and you might not have enough Papal Favor to apply ) but you can technically excommunicate other factions by going to war with them.

It gets kind of boring though since the Papal States are so uber.

Don't know off the top of my head, but please just look at the FAQ - that will answer all your questions about this subject. It is very easy to do, but just a note that your game will be very buggy. It's not really worth doing.

Honestly, its not worth it, I tried it once, bugged to hell, just play a new faction from a mod, like SS or something, or mongols/timurids
