I saw something like this in medieval 2, i tried it, and found my computer still ran the game smoothly, i figured "hey, why not try doing that with Rome ?" So here i am, does anyone know how to disable these fugly sprites ?

I have no idea what you are talking about. Try to explain in a manner that we can understand, and do so in the Technical or Modding forums. Not here, since this is the General Discussion, and what you are asking for is modding help.

What are sprites? In the context of the game, that is.

I mean, when you zoom really close to a unit, and you can see that unit in full 3d, but when you zoom out, the unit's 3d model is replaced by a "sprite" or a 2 dimensional representation of the unit. In theory this system was supposed to reduce lag, however, now that the game has been out for a few years this is no longer needed on computers like mine, which can handle seeing all the units in glorious 3d.
Surely you have noticed this as well ? when you zoom out a certain distance half your army becomes this distorted blurry mass, that just doesn't look as good as the soldiers closer to you, which have not been turned into sprites.
PS: I know that the game USES sprites for sure, as i have observed that in many files regarding battle models, they are referenced (EX: "model_sprite 100.0, data/sprites/rs/camel_sprite.spr") .

Indeed the game does use sprites when zooming way out, and they're easy to turn off. Simply set all graphic options to max and use the best resolution you have available, though it may seem the sprites are still there, they really aren't. I know because I tried this and I'm now playing without any sprites at all (Or if they're still there, then they're so detailed I can't tell)
Hah, funny, when i do this the game becomes incredibly laggy.
*sigh* well, it was worth a try. Thanks for answering my question though !
PS: its so weird, this works great for medieval 2... ah well

If you can't stand lag, turn down grass effects and vegetation graphics. Not that those play a key role anyway.
Turn up AA and unit detail, turn off shadows and grass. That works for me.
