Bernard Sumner one hell of an underrated Artist and perhaps the best Post-Punk guitarist ever. The tunes are simple but effective.

In my opinion neither of those two. The greatest guitarist involves a combination of musical talent, technique, passion and of course the degree of innovation relative to their own time.

Hendrix bridges all four of these mores, producing a fusion of some of the most soulful guitar playing ever written and performed. People to this day still copy even his mistakes.

Of course there are hundreds of others. Perosnal favourties of mine are (for the reasons above, I am not saying they are the best, just that they are the best to me):

    Djano Reinhardt
    Chet Atkins
    Slash
    Page
    Jerry Reed
    Paul Kossoff
    Buster B Jones
    Dimebag
    Angus Young

If we're talking about metal - it's Chuck Schuldiner above the rest.

    @OP
I can't say that Rory is the best guitarist, honestly.

    It's gotta be Hendrix.

One of my personal favorites and vastly overlooked guitarist is Dean Ween. He receives little credit because Ween does not get much commercial success or take anything seriously, but he is a great guitarist.

Well Rory kicks ass, but my personal favorites are Page and Morello.

In the more bluesy side SRV.

    And for metal Adrian Smith.

For prog rock there is none better than Steve Howe, thoug I'm also a big fan of Steve Hackett (great diversity), Ralph Towner in the Jazz field (saw him in Melbourne recently...just fantastic) and of course John Williams in the Classical field. There are just so many great guitarists out there.

I'd have to say Hendrix, too.
I like Kerry King's weird style, too.

Great(est) guitarists are Angel Romero, Al di Meola, John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia, Django Reinhardt, that kind of musicians. Not hyped guys who make a lot of noise.

Personal favourites are John Frusciante and EVH

However i beleive that there is a certain "level" , a platau so to speak, of ability that some guitarists reach where they can play anything if they put their mind to it, i think all of these guitarists are therefore equal regardless of style so people like Hammet and K.King are as good as Page and Clapton in terms of sheer ability

    Making noises? Examples, please...

Bah. I probably shouldn`t discuss at all, but...

    Example 1: noise

    Example 2: music

    See (hear) the difference?
I`m glad I could help. If not, let`s say we have different tastes.

You have to be crucified for Chuck

Besides that, comparing those is preposterous. These are different things. I'm a big Paco, Montgomery, etc. fan. That doesn't mean, I can't appreciate the beauty of rock and metal. Trying not to be narrow-minded.
    Holier than thou attitude? Meh...

No, no, no. On the contrary. I listen to different types of music. Simply, name of the thread is "greatest guitarists" and Paco, McLauhlin & Co. are way better (or more skillfull if you prefer that term) than Chuck Schuldiner. I love Galagher`s music or Clapton`s and adore Joy Division but I would never call them "greatest" OK?
