Icon2 Clint Eastwood thinks Political Correctness has made Society Humourless

    http://in.news.yahoo.com/139/2009022...orrectnes.html

    From Clint Eastwood himself.

    Fri, Feb 27 01:15 PM
London, February 27 (ANI): Acting legend Clint Eastwood , 79, apparently believes that political correctness has rendered modern society humourless, for he accuses younger generations of spending too much time trying to avoid being offensive.
The Dirty Harry star insists that he should be able to tell harmless jokes about nationality without fearing that people may brand him "a racist".
"People have lost their sense of humour. In former times we constantly made jokes about different races. You can only tell them today with one hand over your mouth or you will be insulted as a racist," the Daily Express quoted him as saying.
"I find that ridiculous. In those earlier days every friendly clique had a 'Sam the Jew' or 'Jose the Mexican' - but we didn't think anything of it or have a racist thought. It was just normal that we made jokes based on our nationality or ethnicity. That was never a problem. I don't want to be politically correct.
We're all spending too much time and energy trying to be politically correct about everything," he added. (ANI)
What do you think of his opinion? Any of you agree with The Man With No Name/Dirty Harry here? Brilliant actor by the way. I agree with what he said, if anyone wants to know. Political correctness isn't the way society should go.

    I agree fully.

It's half the reason I exaggeratedly act like an offensive ass in some of my posts, because I hate this tongue-shrivelling PC bollocks so much it nearly makes me wanna puke.

Think he's referring to the recent Clint Eastwood flick, Grand Torino that incorporates such themes. Pretty sick film actually.

I just straight out reject the implications he's making. I believe that the idea of self-censorship is a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you want to make jokes about irishmen then do it, damn it, and stop whining that some people may not.

I don't think you understand what he's saying. Do you even understand what political correctness is?

Again, are you deliberately mis-reading his words, or do you truly not get it?

He's not saying humor should derive from racially inspired jokes, he's saying society in general in the West needs to lighten up. Instead of trying to censor ourselves, we shouldn't bother; real racists will be looked down upon, while everyone else who cracks a joke will get a laugh and then people move on.

Here in the United States, someone in a Town Hall meeting talked about the budget being a "Black hole." Some black dude said "You mean a white hole."

Not only did the black dude completely not understand what a black hole is, he automatically assumed the guy was being racist.

That's what political correctness at its semi worst. A bunch of misinformed morons telling everyone to be afraid of offending everyone.

At PC's real worst, it is censorship of History. That is most dangerous to me. In modern day academica, it is politically incorrect to talk about wars and military history. Instead, these so called smart people have decided that history is all about art, and that war is only the lack of communication and because we were sexually deprived, etc.

It's hippie nonsense that instead of being thrown about by the people we depend on to educate our children, is being embraced and taught to our unsuspecting kids.

Of course, it isn't all bad, I think it's good to be respectful, but I don't think I should risk being attacked as a bigot if I wish someone "a Merry Christmas."

One may like or dislike who Clint Eastwood is but he makes a pretty valid point regarding Political Correctness and how it has affected societies.

You make criticism for group A or B and you are labeled are racist, dellusional, extreme nationalist or whatever else.

If you ask me it is another case of "So obsessed on saving a tree that we loose the forest".
Any community that gets its laughs by pretending to be idiots will eventually be flooded by actual idiots who mistakenly believe that they are in good company.

This coming from the guy who portrayed the Japanese as these noble samurai suffering Christ characters in Iwo Jima, when in fact their war crimes towards Korean, Chinese, American, Canadian and Australian prisoners were so horrendous as to beggar belief.
Don't get me long, I like Eastwood. He's an icon of All American ass-kicking machismo, after all. But you can't circulate in commie hollywood without absorbing a hefty dose of liberal bs.
Also, Eastwood is the last chap to complain about sense of humour. He hasn't smiled since the 80's, and has never made a pooh and fart joke.

That is very strange, because I find him to be quite the abstract comedian and a good role model for all male americans to look up to.

Well for a man who made his career shooting Mexicans and spending years with that whiny Sondra Locke I guess you'd need a sense of humour.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin' at my film knowledge.. You see, my film knowledge don't like people laughin'. Gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it...

Italians always return fire. Or they poison you when they offer you a meal. Renaissance customs stick.

But we love Clint so we wouldn't poison him too hard.
