    Default Python

    Looking for an in-depth guide for installing and running python, either 2.5 or 2.6 for vista.

    The few tutorials I've found so far are all for Linux or Mac, so comp useless, so any help would be great.

    Thanks in advance, peace.

    You could also consider pythonxy available here:

    http://www.pythonxy.com/download.php

    They mention Vista on the download page so it should be ok for that.
    pythonxy is a very large compilation of many third party addins to python.
    It includes the core python 2.5 (it takes them about six months to
    incorporate the latest python because they have to wait on all the
    third party guys to update), but also numpy (very general
    multidimensional array module), PyQt4 (very nice GUI builder module),
    mayavi2 (3D graphics visualizer), and so on.

    The download is a Windows installer so just double-click it to start, and
    then pick which components you want to install. (The installer is
    about 350 Mbytes so it is a long download.)

    But... if you're only going to RUN python, not do any programming yourself, what do you need an in-depth guide on running python for? Just run it. And installing is just downloading and clicking "next", "next", "next" etc. like with everything else. I did it myself an hour ago, in Vista32. Couldn't have been simpler.

    Had no idea, will deff take some time to go look through it, hopefully get a better clue, KE's as always a savior on this site, thanks so much for the info, can't wait to see your genius when empire comes out.

    Anyways thanks again, have a good one.

    Well wish it was that easy for me, the simple click and install is true though the problem is it doesn't actually work, anytime i try to run functions or syntax scripts or open certain programs with it, simply doesn't work.

    So considering the amount of coding that uses this or mat labs (which is hella exp) getting this to work right is deff worth putting in the time.

    @deadlyshadow187,

    Well that is unfortunate. Sorry, my preconceptions were ah ha, another
    budding python programmer. But let's rerun the tape. Do you just want
    to install a version of python under Vista that can execute the many
    wonderful utilities created for M2TW? This should not be a hard exercise.

    What happened when you first tried to install python, and where and what
    were you trying to install? If you were working from www.python.org it
    should have worked. What happened or what error messages did you
    experience. We can correspond further on this, but you should check
    Program Files and find what might have been created there. You could
    always try Add/Remove programs from the Control Panel and remove
    something created there that has Python in it and go back to
    www.python.org and look for a .msi or .exe self-extracting executable
    that has the latest Python distribution. These have always worked
    for me. A test for a good installation is to bring up a DOS box,
    Start Menu->Programs->Accessories-->Command Prompt and then
    type python at the prompt. If you see >>> as the prompt, type something
    like

    x = [1, 3, 5]

    which is a python list. If it understands it, you've got python.

    I'm running 2.6.1 Python under Vista 64 with no problems at all. There is a version 3 out there, but don't be tempted if you want to run the tools KE has made for M2TW. Version 3 is not backwards compatable without 'converting' the stuff over.

    I just downloaded the windows install archive from the Python homepage, installed and it worked straight out of the box.

    You can have multiple versions of Python installed on your computer. I have Pythonxy which runs with 2.5 plus some other extensions to run things like KE's World Terrain Editor and Wrye's Wrye Bash(for managing Oblivion Mods). I also have 2.6 because a lot of mid-last year tools run on it. And finally I have 3.0.1.

    There's a simple way to tell your system which python is the "default", but I forgot it, maybe KE knows. I just run mine manually to the EXEs.

    If you want to learn Python, I suggest learning 3.0 since it's the future build and if you aren't good at drilling yourself on some syntax changes your 2.X knowledge won't carry over. Having said that the 2.X languages will be in use for many more years, and most of the books(including Python for Dummies[2.5]) are still on the 2.X series. There's a good one out there on 3 though, just have to look.

    Well as a starts that is deff my first base, though i do wish to try my best to learn the language as best i can, the more i read this and that, the more i'm generally impressed with the functionality of the program, as is i'm still just a babe when it comes to my knowledge base, but hopefully in time with work & perseverance i can grow.

    Indeed i went through about 8 or so diff tutorials looking for something diff, or something i maybe had overlooked, but to no avail, untill i started going through my system, started noticing some inconsistencies in the my mainframe, it seems about 3 or so months ago when i had a freak system meltdown, i had somehow accidently messed up my install.

    one of the good things or bad depending on the situation about vista is it's generaly really hard to break for the most part and will in general fix anything one way or the other, so i had simply not really noticed, for the most part there have been many little things that were not exactly right but, easy to work around.

    But anyways blah blah i had to redo my system again...blah, tedious boring crap, but in the end i finally got python to work per say, though havent tried to run syntax or mess with the IDLE much, gonna take me a min to learn the language, but atleast i got it up.

    So thanks again, appreciate you comming to the rescue,

    I'm using 3.01 on vista 32 but I have no idea if it works. I don't understand any of this goblygook.
    i think the base command in the command prompt to see if it's generally working is, cd \Python25
    python

    then just do some base code like a=5, so then a equals 5 now so a+5 will come out 10 blah blah, i mean comp nothing special but atleast let u know it's up and running.
