Norwegian government wants to make all citizens "quiet organ donors"
Ok that's is not entirely true. One of the parties making up the current government wants to make all citizens "quiet organ donors". This means that unlike now where you have to say it's ok to harvest your organs after you die you have to put yourself on a list to say it's not ok.

Now this is of course a delicate issue. A lot of people out there have problems with organ donation. So I am asking what the people out here in TWC think about this? Important step in order to fight diseases and health problems? Or gross overstep of trust and authority?

On a personal note, how can a political party say this not controversial while still calling decriminalization of light narcotics controversial? :S

Not really... it just reverses the list thing.

Goes from being "well I'm an organ donor" with closed eyes and upward, sanctimonious inflection to a "well I ain't no organ donor" and spits in a bowl.

Yeah, they want to do the same here in the UK.
According to the Theory of War, which teaches that the best way to avoid the inconvenience of war is to pursue it away from your own country, it is more sensible for us to fight our notorious enemy in his own realm, with the joint power of our allies, than it is to wait for him at our own doors.

In theory yes, but you have to think about the families and the deceased's whished. Not all people would be comfortable being carved up after they die. Also would you yourself/ your family have any say in who gets your organs?

Hmm, I would say more people are worried about being carved up to death than after death.

Well yes, but if my heart and lungs was to be used by another human I would want to have a say in the matter.

I don't know how the organ- and donor situation looks in Norway, but here (Denmark) there is a overwhelming majority who wouldn't mind being donors. Yet there is an acute shortage of organs, imo because people are generally lazy/have lots of other stuff on their minds, and don't get around to signing up. Meaning that doctors have to let go of perfectly suitable organs, not because the person did not want to donate, but because they don't know if the person would like to donate. You can rest assured that those who for whatever reason don't want to donate at all, or only want to donate certain parts will let their concerns be known if people are "automatically" listed as donors. All in all I don't see what the big fuss is about tbh.

It oversteps the the populations rights, even though i generally agree with the law. If you give the governement and inch, they will take a mile.

Of course I can, but I should not have to (also I not sure if I would if I had some say) I would not want my liver to go to people like Fred Phelps, and if there was even a slightest chance it would happen, well.

Why is this certain party proposing this in the first place? Is Norway short of organ doners?

Yes, like all counties in the world there is a long waitlist for almost all organs in Norway.

Also they have a track record of proposing bul and politically correct things. Earlier this month they claimed that their proposed law banning all criticism of Islam would strengthen the freedom of press and speech.

    Some people feel that way.
For me it's just that I would not want to see my organs(or my friends) keeping people I would rather see dead alive.

I think this law have been suggested in many country's i seem to remember a recent story of it in Sweden but i might be wrong.

AS long as they make it very easy to say no i would not mind.
Maybe send out an addiosnal paper with the tax return saying X here and send in if you dont wanna be on the list.

Same thing here in Romania too, what is it, a new trend?

Anyway, it's really a law for the lazy people isnt it? I mean, if you really care about the health issue, you go and sign youself as a donor.

Then again, the law throws a spotlight on the matter, and eventually will end up having more donors overall.

I'm ok with it, but before jumping to this they could try a more hardcore campaign for organ donation, shouldnt just jump to this "quiet" thing. In Romania there is about No goverment campagins for organ donation, so naturally the number of donors is low. So they want this as a cheap-shot to solve the grand problem.

Even though I'm an organ donor I think it's something they should have to ask you, not just volunteer you unless you say otherwise.

    I mean, it's not like it's COMPULSORY.

Placing yourself on a list to not donate organs is like having to sign up for police protection; it's just stupid. Your body is your own personal vessel and I think someone should get explicit permission before messing around with it.

This is the difference between volunteerism and conscription and the gov't is way out of line to conscript its citizens as organ farms.
