    does 3ds max normally save files with the extension .3ds?

    If by chance you mean can you take a Total War Model and open it in 3Ds Max and alter it?

    Then yes you can, I've seen some Tutorial videos on YouTube that show you how to do it.

    With a few appropriate plugins, Blender works for me! Just as good as 3DS, and free to boot.

    I thought you needed the right plugin to import the models? I've got the .cas exporter (and the import/export script someone made) but never used them, since the only TW game i have is Empire.

    Blender can never match 3D Studio MAX, it's professional software. Still blender can be used for a lot. but 3D Studio MAX and MAYA have the most. But they have loads of things that are not necessary for Total War modding.
