Any Problems with Steam?

I was debating buying Empire Total War on Steam, however I am a huge fan of mods. I play SS religiously and I seem to recall but cant find posts regarding installation problems with steam. I figured here would be the appropriate place to ask this since I know it has been mentioned before. Is it hard or impossible to play sub mods with a steam version of a game? If so I wont buy Empire through steam. Thanks.

For preference get the version on DVD - saves problems with downloads etc.

And don't judge Empire w/Steam by how M2TW and Steam work. It will be totally different (because it is planned from the beginning).
