Default UK gov, Guantanamo and Minutes

Jack Straw issued a statement vetoing the release of minutes from a 2003 cabinet meeting regarding the war in Iraq, the shadow secretary supported the decision:

Tony Wright, chairman of the influential public administration select committee, argued that while he agreed with the principle of collective responsibility the value of the information tribunal's "external and independent arbitration" was being undermined by the veto.

He asked: "Won't this confirm people's beliefs… there is something in the minutes which needs to be hidden?"

    What do you think?

Furthermore the return of a man presumably innocent considering his release, is the return of a man having spent 7 years held for being involved in the war on terror. He has said that he has been subjected to medieval torture methods including one that was taken direct from the spanish inquisition and there appears to evidence that questions and support was given by British Secret Services.

These events (should the second appear to accurate) to me signal a worrying confirmation of this governments actions over the last few years.

    Thoughts?

It is indeed worrying. I didnt know about the minutes thing, but its hard not to know about the man released from Gitmo. Obviously he's gonna be fair pissed off what with being held for seven years without trial. But I still think there's probably something in his alledged charges, to hear that torture is happening at Guantanamo is now like hearing that Millwall supporters are unpleasant; its become a fairly common view.

And considering how closely we did work with america, I wouldnt be too suprised to hear we'd colluded in torture.

If someone ''thought'' you had done something bad and held you for seven years without trial how would you view that?

It wasn't just Gitmo, it was rendition to other countries that were practicing even worse tortures than what occured at Gitmo, at least what we are aware occurred in Gitmo.

I'm just trying to be balanced, personally I wouldnt be suprised if they'd been rigging the rack up. But in any case, just as he shouldnt be dismissed as bitter, he also shouldnt be just 100% believed; it would be foolish to just immediately accept what he says as true, without first at least making a go of an investigation into it - not that it will get anywhere.

And yes, he said he was tortured in Morocco too? I believe I heard something about being threatened with a medical scalpel, which is bloody brutal if true.
