Well if you've only just started playing, play on Medium. Most veteran players are avid VH/VH players.

I play on VH/VH or sometimes VH/H so the battles don't run away so easily..I recommend Normal or Medium for Beginners.. if those are to hard try easy![]()
Start on the default and get a feel for the game. You will not be able to determine what the changes are if you fiddle too much before you get to know the game.
Plenty of time to fiddle on later campaigns.

thanks alot guys....these guides have really helped..im starting to get the hang of it. is this game better as a short campaign or long campaign??
one more thing?? if i want to get a mod which mod should i get?? SS or any one of the other mods for MTW??
SS is very good but goes slowly because there are many turns to go with the huge map. LTC plays faster; I like it because you can recruit generals - mounted and foot. I recommend playing the Retrofit Mod from Kingdoms first, if you have it.
SS is golden, but like geezer says turns do take awhile.
Strategy though, basics against AI for me are all variations of hammer and anvil for western troops, meaning spears and heavy infantry to engage the enemy's foot and cavalry encircle to kill archers/artillery and then charge the rear of enemy infantry resulting in routes. encircling with foot helps too. add archers/artillery to personal flavor.
Eastern troops are similar only with a greater reliance on horse archers chewing up the enemy first.
The only battles that get difficult are the ones where you get stuck without your cav and the AI has it and then you just dig in and hope your archers chew them up.
Oh and always fight on hills! The advantage of the high ground is very real.
I usually play on H/H, VH/VH for me just seems like the AI is cheating and I wind up killing stacks that would take me turns to make every turn. It's mostly because I like to play the game on the strategic map as well, VH gives you tons of battles you have to fight personally so it takes me forever to make progress. M/M is a good starting place, the game is very easy when you get the basics down.
