Default US soldier gives motivational speech to Iraqi police

    A video well-worth watching.

    WARNING: Yes, soldiers do swear/curse!

This highlights the many difficulties the US has had in transferring control from the military to the Iraqis, and is also a testament to the great work they have done - I believe 2/3rds of the country (13/18 provinces) is currently in Iraqi hands (well that was the status last October).

It must be very frustrating dealing with certain elements of the police having divided or hidden loyalties or a lazy-assed attitude. There will come a point in time though when the US will leave, and these 'police' will either have to man-up and do the job, or strip off their uniforms and flee like little girls and watch their homes descend into chaos and slaughterhouses once again.

Badass speech. Who is this guy? He really grabbed the police by the balls, and if they're at all competent that will get them fired-up and moving.

If anything, calling them women will get them off their asses. That's a big deal in Arab culture.

yea, i saw this last week and its totally true. The iraqi police alot of times are complete cowards who would rather rat out their fellow officers to the local militia, then do what they were hired to do. Before any jumps on this guy, this is what happens when you royally piss off your CO, and our troops get the same kind of treatment when it happens.

remember, its supposed to be motivational, not abusive. sometimes you need to a harsh talking to, for the message to get through.

The soldier made a valiant attempt, but it seemed to be futile.

Whether you agree with the invasion of Iraq or not is quite irrelevant. I personally don't really think it should have happened, but no use crying over spilt milk and not much anyone can do about it. This vid deals with the situation on the ground after the invasion, the current reality, and what is being done there now in difficult circumstances.

Third option: run their local neighbourhoods as an effective mafia allied to paramilitaries and corrupt politicians. I'm guessing this one is more likely.
True. In which case all Iraqis in such neighbourhoods suffer.

If that's the case then why are these guys even selected to be police?

You don't see US soldiers fleeing like little girls, you see them kicking ass when they need to. Like the soldier in the vid said "I'll take 3 trucks down that road any day...." - I honestly believe he is not lying.

Im sure those policeman are scared to death . If people know they work for the police they can get there family kill .

Why those guy are selected ? cause no 1 want the job and some man need the money to feed up their family im sure thats why they take the job .

I cant even put myself for 5 sec in there pants considering all that can happen to them or the people they love .

But the US military put them in that situation and yes they have to deal whit it .

they have been pretty well established. they were big news during the invasion and hunt for saddam. His sons were especially noted for abducting women off the streets and raping them. Both of whom were mass murderers like their father.

we arent shoving off responsibility, we are there at the pleasure of the iraqi govt. At some point momma bird needs to shove baby democratic iraq out of the nest. The longer we stay, the more dependent on our aid they will grow.

wait you expect us to take a hundred thousand casualties before we leave? what kind of retarded idea is that? this is hardly vietnam, we dont have iraqis trying to board the last helicopter off the US embassy, and we arent even leaving completely. We are simply drawing down on offensive operations and leaving an advisory force behind.

And yet most of them braved getting killed to vote in their first election in their lives. repressed peoples do tend to value their freedom, and this is what most iraqis will tell you. Sure it was "safer" under saddam, but that safety came under the bootheel of absolute tyranny, now they have to the chance to live under a democratic system where any tribe or party can rise through the ranks of power, not just the bathe party.

I wonder how effective speeches like that are though given the cultural differences. I mean it works here in the US but I wonder how much influence it actually has with Iraqis.

Actually the way he spoke to the Iraqis, the terms he used, comparing them to women, is all very effective contextually. In theory I mean. Plus, military culture is military culture. You piss off the boss, you're going to hear about it. A lot of those policeman probably weren't of age or inclination to serve under the Ba'athists, but they should have at least known about it. Remember, finally, that the US has been building up a new military culture and police structure in Iraq for five years, effective strategies must have been found and implemented by now.
