    Default Hospitallers vs. Lancers

I'm currently playing a long campaign as France, and I just got access to their much vaunted Lancers. I have the Knights' Hospitaller HQ and the Horse Breeder's Guild HQ. So, I can train Lancers with two silver chevrons, and Hospitallers with a gold chevron. I noticed that with weapon and armor upgrades, the Hospitallers actually had higher attack and defense ratings than the Lancers. I went into the custom battle menu and tried some tests to see which were better. When they both charge at the same time, the Hospitallers wipe the floor with them. The only time the Lancers actually won was when I had the Hospitallers stand still while the Lancers charged them, and even then it was close. The Lancers may have advanced plate, but their lack of shields causes them to get butchered in a melee.

Yes , in vanilla , Lancers and Gendarmes are nothing special , better use Order's knights that you get sooner , that's a pity but it's like that , quite a few other units of other factions also are not as attractive as they should be , so i'd advise you to try some good mods like stainless steel that makes them more like they should have been , cheers

Are Lancers slightly faster? But why play just plain vanilla anyway? At least play Retrofit. Why play a Beta?

The difference between lancers and order knights or equivalent is armor. Hospitllars use a shield, which only gives a full defensive bonus from the front, and no defensive bonus from the rear. Instead of a shield, lancers have higher armor, so they are better protected from all angles. The charge and melee attack between the two are exactly the same though.

Given a choice, I'd go with Hospitllars since they have a lower upkeep and they have two armor upgrades available to them, making them considerably more powerful than lancers. Also, I think they have a higher discipline.

You might as well be speaking to me in a foreign language. I don't have any idea what a retrofit or a beta is. I've never played a mod before.

Go find the mod Stainless Steel and play it.. Retrofit is a Kingdoms mod that allows you to play the vanilla campaign on kingdoms with the new kingdoms features and units..
