Default Iowa National Guard to hold ''gun confiscation'' drill

The Carroll National Guard unit will train on urban military operations by holding a four-day exercise at Arcadia.

The purpose of the April 2-5 drill will be to gather intelligence, then search for and apprehend a suspected weapons dealer, according to Sgt. Mike Kots, readiness NCO for Alpha Company.

Citizens, law enforcement, media and other supporters will participate.

Troops will spend Thursday, April 2, staging at a forward operations base at Carroll. The next day company leaders will conduct reconnaissance and begin patrolling the streets of Arcadia to identify possible locations of the weapons dealer.

The primary phase will be done Saturday, April 4, when convoys will be deployed from Carroll to Arcadia. Pictures of the arms dealer will be shown in Arcadia, and soldiers will go door to door asking if residents have seen the suspect.

Soldiers will knock only at households that have agreed to participate in the drill, Kots noted.

"Once credible intelligence has been gathered," said Kots, "portions of the town will be road-blocked and more in-depth searches of homes and vehicles will be conducted in accordance with the residents' wishes.

"One of the techniques we use in today's political environment is cordon and knock," Kots explained. "We ask for the head of the household, get permission to search, then have them open doors and cupboards. The homeowner maintains control. We peer over their shoulder, and the soldier uses the homeowner's body language and position to protect him."

During this phase of the operation, troops will interact with residents and media while implementing crowd-control measures and possibly treating and evacuating injured persons.

The unit will use a Blackhawk helicopter for overhead command and control, and to simulate medevacs.

The drill will culminate in the apprehension of the suspected arms dealer.

Alpha Company will conduct a review of the drill on Sunday, April 5.

A meeting to give residents more information and accept volunteers will be held 7 p.m. Monday, March 2, in the Arcadia American Legion hall.

Kots said the exercise will replace Alpha Company's weekend drill for April.

"We have a lot of extended drills this coming year," he added.

In addition to surveillance, searching and apprehension, the exercise will also give the troops valuable experience in stability, support, patrol, traffic control, vehicle searches and other skills needed for deployment in an urban environment.

"This exercise will improve the real-life operational skills of the unit," said Kots. "And it will hopefully improve the public's understanding of military operations."

The pre-drill work with residents is as important at the drill itself.

"It will be important for us to gain the trust and confidence of the residents of Arcadia," said Kots. "We will need to identify individuals that are willing to assist us in training by allowing us to search their homes and vehicles and to participate in role-playing."

"We really want to get as much information out there as possible, because this operation could be pretty intrusive to the people of Arcadia."

You might be buying to much into this. Many national guardsmen are sent to Iraq and Afghanistan, so this skill could be put to use their.

Rubbish. They are obviously doing counter-insurgency training for possible overseas deployment. You are jumping to conclusions.

Sometimes sarcasm doesn't transmit well over the internet, and I hope this is one of those times! Because I really amn't sure how you got martial law from a military drill that is, above all, optional.

This is probably just training for situations faced in Iraq/Afghanistan when searching for possible weapons staches. Aswell as that, like the article says, it helps give a better understanding of what the military is doing to the public. (PR??)

Seems like good training, working with civilians adds the X factor you don't get working with soldiers as OPFOR.

And no it isn't Martial Law in the slightest as its a training exercise that is voluntary.

I've read the article twice now, no where does it mention confiscation of guns, only arresting a weapons dealer.

OMG guys listen to this, this is of VITAL IMPORTANCE. I was taking my daughter to karate practice (she started her training early for the day it goes down which appears to be now!) and I saw 2 cop cars pull over this guy who. ITS MARTIAL LAW, they had him in handcuffs and Im like man wth is this...its Nazi Germany all over again. So I turned the car around and sped home at 90mph and Im now in my underground bunker with wife and daughter waiting for them to come for me next. This isnt right, this America not Russia...spread the world! viva la resistance! Long live the republic, stay strong, stay safe, stay free.

YOU USED FRENCH FREEDOMESE You foreign traitor. Line him up with the others.

This is a great example of people seeing what they want to see in a perfectly logical drill. Let me highlight some things for you:
    apprehend a suspected weapons dealer
Soldiers will knock only at households that have agreed to participate in the drill, Kots noted.
soldiers will go door to door asking if residents have seen the suspect.
OH MY GOD IT'S LIKE POLICE TRAINING. OPPRESSION, RABBLE RABBLE.

Funny thing is people seem to forget the goals/objective of national guard is are different then other branches. They are under the control of governors, their job is for internal usage primarily, disasters etc...to suggest such a force doesnt need this type of training is amusing really.

Well look at what happened in New Orleans, when that disaster happened?
They went in with there guns aiming at people and forcibly disarming people and searching there homes.

But what would happen if this governor or government went rouge?
    What would happen then?
Once everyone's guns are confiscated, how does everyone resist what is happening?
Ok, i agree it isn't martial law, i shouldn't of put that, i should of put could, maybe that would be better?
Don't forget the state the world is in t the moment, It's hardly in good shape is it?
It's going to get alot worse before it gets better.
Would you want soldiers patrolling you're streets on a permanent basis if the economy doesn't straighten itself out?
Telling everyone what to do and not do, if unrest does start?
Don't get me wrong it probably will not happen but it is not a definite it will not happen is it?

What exactly is a "milltrastic state"?

Is it militarily fantastic? Or maybe it's militarily sarcastic? I like that one.

Violent sarcasm has broken out in the streets of America. When asked to comment, one person replied, "Yeah, like I'm going to talk to you," and then punched this reporter in the face.

After Reading the article I haven't the slightest clue as how you can call the drill in question and example of 'Martial law.' If anything, civilians and soldiers working together would seem to bring a greater level of respect and cooperation between the two.

The National Guard is for all intents and purposes the "well-regulated militia" of the Second Amendment.
