Icon9 Why does everybody hate me?

Great mod, I've started the campaign with the order of the Knights Templar and I'm in the 100th turn now. When I started everything seemed to go OK, the pope loved me and I reached the point of having 12 cardinals (2 preferati). Then at some point my reputation with the pope began to deteriorate (even though my priests are maxed out and I've completed 4 of the 5 crusades). Now whenever I change turn 7 new factions start hating me, factions like france that are in the other part of the world.

How can I control this hatred and why is my reputation deceitful no matter what I do?

btw I play without cheats and my kingdom extends from smyrna to baghdad and from ankara to mecca. (I also have ragusa from a crusade and cordoba, granada and murci from another crusade)

You are playing 6.2 right? Probably has to do with the new AI.

Yes the title a sounds bit dramatic

I have the 6.0 version, I thought that maybe it had something to do with the fact that I'm the most advanced faction. But the problem with the reputation also occured in the original total war. The good thing is that noone has a good reputation, still I would like to know how it works.

I would strongly recommend upgrading to 6.1 and then 6.2. There are so many little bugs (inevitable in a mod this huge) that the patches fix.

Only occupy settlements you conquer. NEVER sack or exterminate.
Release ALL prisoners taken in battle.
End all battles when you first get the victory: don't continue to chase down routing enemies.
    Do not use assassins.

Great, I do every single one of those things, I always sack (unless it was previously mine) I always continue the battle (that way my generals and cavarly reach high experience) I always ransom the prisoners ( unless Im outside enemy city walls when I execute them so I can quickly capture the city) and I use assasins to kill imams. It must need great patience to save your reputation.

Funny; you just laid out the EXACT opposite of my playstyle.

If you don't work on keeping relationships they will gradually degrade over time. If your getting lots of kingdoms telling you they like you less on the same turn its probably because you've ignored them all for a lot of turns. Just doing simple things like buying their map, most sell for around 700 with the big areas going for more like 1500.

It might also be due to who's friends with who and who you are attacking. It seems like the game doesn't take into account who starts a war, just who wins (hence kills) the most. I was in full favour of the pope, then he died and my cardinal, who you would expect to love me whatever I do, especially if I attack someone who broke our alliance by seiging me by suprise, but no, only reason I didn't get excommunicated was I followed his order to stop aggression.

Once i've got my economy up and running I usually send small gifts regularly to my allies to keep them happy. I'm guessing not only does it make them not want to attack you since they're getting gifts, but makes others want to be your friend. At the opposite end if you just ignore everyone while steamrolling over nations they'll obviously grow to fear and dislike you.

Actually I've never thought of giving so much money:hmmm:, I occasionally give 200 maybe even 500 (when I feel particularly generous) to my allies. And if you offer 700 for their map wouldn't the very generous sentence come up? Its a bit to much for a bloody map.

... 700 is not that much, consider back then people sent missionaries one after another just to draw maps of the world...

And after all that trouble they still got it wrong...

I never really do anything for my allies because (besides trading with me) they never do anything for me.

Considering the technology they had compared to now, they were accurate enough.

I'm a big fan of paying tribute all over the place. I occupy settlements generally, but I do a lot of murdering with my assassins, a lot of trade wars with my merchants, I never release prisoners. I find that buttering up the Pope and significant allies with regular tribute keeps them happy, and not stabbing me in the back/calling crusades against me.
Buying map info etc is good advice, it's always a good idea to keep several diplomats/princesses strategically placed to do any palm-greasing that needs to be done.
