they are gods on the battlefield.

A few mods have start times that enable you to play as the Golden Horde (Ask in the appropriate thread for them!), but normally you can't.

i mean what's the point of tempting us with great factiosn when we cant play them

like the papacy for eg.

probably cuz they're ridiculously overpowered

The mongols you can play as in various mods. Just go to the mods forum and look around. I am sure you will find something pretty fast. That's what I did, but for other reasons.

Remember the Papacy is not really meant to be a faction per-se, because they generally shouldn't become a military threat to anyone, only a political one. Although I must say that you do bring a good point, sometimes the Papacy extends like crazy and actually becomes a superpower. I guess it is difficult to make a campaign work as the Papacy.

well i find the mongols would be ideal for my playing style.
i like using a lot of archers and the such and the mongols are awesome.

and their rocket launchers as well.

i've been dreaming of wreaking havoc in euorpe with my rocket launchers

The rocket launchers are not as effective as they seem, at least from my experience playing as the Russians. They are moderately effective against troops and run out of ammo after 3-4 volleys. So the enjoyment is actually quite short. Also they have no aim almost as the rockets seem to fly everywhere in front, so they can't be used for sieges.

so to reconfirm

you can play as the mongols on the stainless steel mod 6.1?

since they come in the midgame does that mean you'd be starting in the midgame as well?

Yes you can play as the Mongols in SS 6.1. I think you have to play in the Late campaign that begins just before the gunpowder event.

If you want a mod which introduces minimal rebalancing and lets you play as the Mongols without any advances in time periods, etc. you can try the Kingdoms Grand Campaign mod.

i dont really mind time advances or whatnot
the golden horde never fails,

just the sheer prospect of terrorizing europe with my hordes is enough to get me salivating
