CTD!!!!!

Hi All,

Don't want to be too much of a whiner....but...

I keep getting a CTD after battles (not auto resolve) which is frustrating the b-jesus out of me.

Now I know what your thinking, and yes I have read all the posts on the issue. I have a completely clean install of RTW 1.5. Installed to new directory local to avoid any past mod remnants. (which vista fails to completely remove when you "uninstall" preveous versions)
Installed SPQR 7 as reqd. All other aspects of game work fine, though do get erroroneous (Thats right I can't spell, ((either))) new turn alerts telling me that juli have decleared war etc, and others that arent true. But this I can live with.

However, after playing defensive battles, up to four/turn (where you can't save after each, as is in AI turn) many of which may be 'down to the wire, nail bitters' then I get CTD..!!.!..!..frustrating. So I then must go back to last save and play them out all again!!! And as your all aware, these battles can be very tough.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

My share of CTD's decreased alot since I started playing it windowed.
Also, it only CTD's for me after computer has been on for too long, since RTW have a tendency to leech resources.
So, my tip is to reboot from time to time and check out the FAQ here in the forums for how to run the game windowed.

I did upgrade to a 512mb video card + 4GB ram, quad core machine. specifically so I could play RTW without issues.
I also don't run other programs whilst gamming, for that very reason.

Yup, you most likely should run the game in windowed mode. Quad core is nice, but useless for RTW whenever you play the game for too long, it can eat up TONS of your RAM, mine once came up to 2.52 Gb of RAM after a hard day of playing, and we all know what windows can do. So yes, go for window mode, restart or clean somehow often, and tell us then how it goes

Btw, RTW doesn't utilize multiple cores, so a quadcore is a bit of a waste.

Did you check for the latest video drivers?

Or audio drives, although not that much common, anything can happen in this.
If you want to test out it all, just auto-resolve the battles (have extra savegame copied) and then let us know how it went

You can also save before each battle even if it is AI turn.

During the force presentation screen, just press Esc and you will be able to save.

Hope it will relieve part of the frustration.

And we also had a similar CTD case related to saving while AI plays as well so...

If it is save related check if you changed the settings for Autosave. Go to preferences text file and check if Auto_save is set to FALSE.

the julli declaring war and other odd statements sound like a scripting error, have you always played with/without it and if playing with do you make sure that turning it on is first thing you do

i've never seen it myself but script and not script can lead to problems

1/ Did't know that you could save during AI turn? This will be very helpful.

1.5/ Auto resolve, best I can recall, does not result in CTD

2/ I am usually very dilegent with the scripting initiation action, but failure to do this evey saved game, while doubtful, can not be ruled out. (always play with script on)

3/ I will pursue the windowed idea.

4/ Interesting that RTW uses single cpu only, did'nt know that niether.

5/ yes have the latest video driver.

I had the same issue with sometimes a CTD at the end of battles,
but playing in windowed mode these last 2 days, it doesn't seem to happen anymore.

Thats just as same as game taking up all the RAM after long term playing.

be nice cze, it took me a long time to realise why restarting computer made a difference-lol

yes they are the same thing but not everyone realises - though most of us learn eventually
