Are the "Spear Warband" units below the Triarii the Germanic Spear Warband or the standard Barbarian "Warband?" Because the Spear Warband is a Phalanx unit, but it's placement is with the normal Spear units, making me think it's referring to the Warband unit.
I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.

Phalanx pikemen - with them, I could hold off an entire full stack of Julii at a bridge...on the same bridge, with regular Greek hoplites, they'd just crumble to dust.

Silver shields for phal as they are greatwith selucias other awesome troops and Triarii for obvious reasons. Also you forgot Triarii and persian infantry. Maybe it didnt fit in the poll.
Millita hoplites and levy pikemen can hold off many many troops if you can use them as well.

Err ... Triarii *are* in the poll ....
Anyway, my votes go to the (misplaced) Germanic Spear Warband for the phalanx unit, because I really like them, and the Triarii for the regular Spear unit, though Samnite mercs come in close second.

Sacred Band and Phalangists for me. The best cost-effective phalanx in RTW, and the coolest unit in Alex.

For what its worth, I'll throw in my opinion:
Phalanx: Spartans for big $ games and Armored Hoplites/Royal Pikemen for lower $ ranges. The armored hoplites are great considering price, and I chose the Royal Pikemen because they are the next best phalanx unit.
(Those Spartans are great, but they are just too expensive in a 10k game! 1.5k for ONE Spartan unit?!)
Spears: Triarii, without a doubt. Fast, well armored, fair amount of attack ability and not too expensive! Great for hitting already engaged cav or preventing flanking manuevers.

Meh. spartans too expensive for the multiplayer. since second best are SB they get the vote. Triarii also kick cavalry ass.

Actually, the question is "Which spearmen unit/s is your favorite?". There aren't certain criteria you have to use for "why".
Anyways, back on topic:
Favorite (Phalanx Unit) = Royal Pikemen
Favorite (Standard Spear Unit) = Warband

Spartans are obviously awesome, only after changing their skins. And Armoured Hoplites, just because they look awesome.
