Default Can you make effecive armies at low levels?

While I was doing my Afternoon activities today(Lunch, Video games, Etc.), I started to wonder:

"Could any faction be able to produce an army capable of beating Rome at Money Levels as low as 5500-6500 Denarii?" then I began to concept some.

well, some players would try to get small amounts of the best troops Rome can get,or try to get a bunch of crap units. so at 5500 Denarii or so they might be able to get 2-3 Praetorian Cohorts, perhaps with some Upgrades, or 8-10 Hastati units. What could I get to Overwhelm that?

Some Warbands and Swordsmen from Gaul or Britannia? :hmmm:

    Foresters perhaps? :hmmm:

    Barbarian Cavalry? :hmmm:

Probably the best Army to use when fighting the army of Low in number Elite units(such as 2, maybe 3 Praetorian Cohorts, no upgrades) would be from Gaul:

    8 Warbands(bb)

    2 Swordsmen(no attack, b defense)

    2 Barbarian Cavalry(no defense, b attack)

    and possibly 1 Forester Warband.

can someone Playtest both of these scenarios and see if it would fit in the budget of 5500-6500 Denarii? and if it does, see if the gauls would win?

Of course! Romans actually get exponentially better and better as money level increases, and the lower the money level, the easier it is to beat them. Barbarians stand a very good chance against Romans at these low money levels. Just take advantage of the cheaper barbarian units; unless you upgrade too much, you should outnumber your Roman opponent, and can thus envelop him with relative ease. Also, I definitely wouldn't take foresters at 5k. Skirmisher warbands with gold attack upgrades work wonders against Roman armor, especially since your opponent probably won't have too many missiles at such a low money level.

I'd look at the amount of units the opponent has, and either go for a swarm of infantry or a group of axe cav.

Britannia and Rome have the best low-cost units, then HA-cav civs like Parthia and Scythia
Of these facts there cannot be any shadow of doubt: for instance, that civil society was renovated in every part by Christian institutions; that in the strength of that renewal the human race was lifted up to better things-nay, that it was brought back from death to life, and to so excellent a life that nothing more perfect had been known before, or will come to be known in the ages that have yet to be. - Pope Leo XIII

gaul has cheap Warbands, and in numbers, they are quite effective, if coupled with Barbarian Cav.

Depends, they still aren't a match for urbans. And if the Roman player would lock down his formation and deny you the rear charge, then you have a problem. If he has hastati and such, he could easily afford spearmen to protect his rear.

well at 6500 f he wants upgrades he'll not be able 2 get Triarii

and i did some tests on a sketchboard in 4 situtions and they were all Gallic Victories:

Small amount of Elite units, 1 group

Small amount of Elite units, 3 groups

large amount of Crap troops, 1 group

large amount of Crap troops, 3 groups

all of these simulations were Gallic Victories(but i haven't playtested them, but i will tommorrow)

Hmm, well show and enlighten me! Because I still don't get it. But I'm going to assume it has to do with deployment and or attack patterns?

Dude, if we want to take chariots it's our choice. You never said that the armies have to be sane or balanced.
