Is this racist? NY Post/Obama

When I first saw the cartoon before any hoopla about it my first thought was making fun of the stimulus bill as being written/thought up etc by an insane chimp. It was only after the Rev Sharpton and his gang of unemployed civil rights activist got on tv and informed me that the cartoon is talking about Obama and that I was wrong that I realized it was racist.

Ok more seriously now, come on how can anyone walk away from this cartoon as the chimp=Obama, Obama didnt WRITE the stimulus bill, as NY Post correctly defends if it was going to be aimed at one person it would be aimed at Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid.

So whats your opinion...vile racist cartoon or people itching to find racism in everything to shout about.

I think this was referring to the chimpanzee that ripped off a woman's face in Jersey as well (the police shot it twice).

Exactly my thought as well, so "well planned" a chimp could do it. I just dont see how one walks away with the chimp=Obama...I actually sat there for a few moments thinking ok what am I missing here. There just isnt anything here....

Which is exactly what the Post said in its defense, that if the cartoon WAS to be aimed at anyone it would have to be aimed at Pelosi. A chimp and Pelosi wouldnt be racist obviously but its a moot point since the cartoon was about the bill as a whole and not singling out anyone.

Monkeys was, and I guess to a limited degree still is, used to describe blacks as a slur. More commonly calling someone/group of people monkeys is like saying their idiots. Who knows, maybe it is directed at Obama, though that doesn't either make it racist. If they are calling him a monkey because hes black, racist. If they are calling him [or the senate, his administration, etc] a monkey due to incompetency, not at all.

They probably should have picked a better way to get their point across, but whatever.

Well we are talking about a dude here who caught feelings over a cartoon (boondocks), so what he said is irelevant. Sounds like an attention whore squeezing any shots to be notice for me.

Besides the picture means something only through matters of interpretation. If the artist don't meant for it to be racist, then i have no idea how can it be so. Besides judging by what the American got for president last time, i guess it just speaking teh truth .

Yeah but what in the cartoon inspires thoughts of Obama? He didnt write the bill after all, congress did so logic would say congress=chimps all Obama did was sign the bill. Thats my issue here, where is the indication that the chimp=Obama beyond some people are overly sensitive.

You know as well as I do that when the economy goes bad people blame the president. The President is the image of the Government. You want to insult the Government, you insult the President. Thats how it is for the majority of Canadians, the majority of Americans, etc. Magazines play to their readership, so its entirely possible that an inaccurate portrayal could arise, but as I said above, I don't think its likely given the context and the more than obvious backlash.

Well of course not. I didn't think it did. Of course magazines are written by a bunch of idiots a lot of the time, and I wouldn't put it past them to make a mistake like that, but in this case the racial slur would be so utterly....blunt...it's just, no. I don't see it being very likely at all.
