I haven't seen a thread on Kashmir on TWC,so here is a poll on it.

Kashmir has been a source of contention for 61 years and has been the cause of war in 1948,1965 and 1999.These wars has divided my family in two,since I have family in Pakistan as well,one of my uncles served as a POW in India.

I personally support the status-quo as it stands.

However I welcome the opinion of others such as those who believe that Kashmir has a right to independence.

I think there should be referendum where the various areas of Kashmir chose for themselves. Since I'm fairly sure most would vote to join Pakistan, I voted that way, but essentially I think it should be up to Kashmiris.

I will probably sound biased by saying this,but India has a stronger economy than Pakistan,so maybe the economic benefits would outweigh any sympathies with Pakistan.

No doubt Kashmir would be part of a more economically and politically stable country if the parts of it in India stayed there and the rest joined. None the less, I suspect religious factors and the history of antipathy between most Kashmiris and the Indian government counts for more. There's only one way to find out though: by actually holding a referendum. However, I strongly doubt that even if an Indian leader wanted to do so it would be politically possible.


BTW, though its true Pakistan has lots of problems with seperatists and areas of pronounced lawlessness and unrest, so does India. Bihar, several North Eastern states (particluarly Nagaland) and, of course, Kashmir are all cases in point.

Well in December there was a successful election in the Indian part of Kashmir.Where Omar Abdullah of thye National Conference Party,won the election despite boycotts.


Indeed,India has plenty of secessionist movements and that is why the Indian government fears that giving up Kashmir would set a dangerous precedent.

On top of this,there is the seemingly perennial problem of communalism i.e. religious sectarianism promoting violence.

The RSS who have links to the BJP are an example of this.

Anything but Pakistan....They cant even control their own territories effectively, and giving them more territory based on religion is only going to further destabilize the region by creating a situation just like western Pakistan.

Yeah that is true,and the ISI are pretty crazy.

But I am unsure if it would be safe in India's hand eithers even though there would be great economic benefits.

Well I would support independence too but I am sure that India and Pakistan would interfere in its affairs anyway.

no not invade directly,but I think that they would continue to fund an insurgency there.My country returns the favour by supposedly funding secessionists in Balochistan lol.

I say independent just like we Bangladeshis did.. Pakistan atm is a pretty unstable country, so its not a good idea. India has a good economy but then again yud havta take in the religous issues and how alot of muslims mite oppose to tat view.

It is Pakistani terrority no if ands or buts about it. It was given to us during our partitions and even though we lost Bangladesh thanks to the Indian intelligence, Kashmir is ours.

Of course, if Kashmir does go with India, there will be wide spread demands to deal with India, which I would not have stopped anyway. The terrority is ours.

But I voted that it joined India, because I would think Pakistan is less likely to fight another war with India over it than vice versa. A war of such proportions is not good
