The Galactic Alignment 2012: End of the world?

The History channel is running a bunch of "what if" programming regarding December 21st 2012, the date of the Galactic Alignment which happens once every 26,000 years. Nostradamus nuts , Biblical buffoons and a Rabbi who appears for all intents and purposes ... on medication ESPOUSE this clap trap!

Your thoughts oh eminent and wise peeps of the forum? Are we all doomed come end of 2012 or should I buy stocks in new market venture of the day and be happy?

I do not think that the world will end. If something happens the world will most likely survive but It will change alot...better stock up on non perishable foods...

It's just a conspiracy theory, lacking base, that can be easily grasped upon by popular culture and the media. Not even the Mayans are fretting that the world will end in 2012. In fact it is a time for great celebration and luck when our planet lasts through a Great Cycle. The Mayans even made inscriptions about dates beyond 2012. For the example, the Tablet of Inscriptions from Palenque included a distance date. So the date would be 1.0.0.0.0.8 5 Lamat 1 Mol, or somewhere near October/November/December 4770 CE. After all, our world has made it through three Great Cycles in the past, why would this particular Cycle differ from the rest? It's (somewhat) similar to calendars we have in our own homes. The Mayan calendar supposedly ends on December 21, 2012 but our calendar ends on December 31, 2009! Ah! Run for the hills!

The earth itself wont end. It will probably be much more of a spiritual event, if anything.

Perhaps some major changes will occur but nothing so drastic as witnessing the end of the planet. The changes may even be imperceptible.

I've always had the strong notion that if the end times come it'll be when we least expect it.

It's just another ridiculous doomsday prophecy like one might see on a senile man's sandwich board in the middle of a crowded street. So what if the Mayans were good a astrology? It's still a worthless pseudoscience. Nostradamus? Anyone could write a meaningless, mysterious sounding quatrain.

Cause, being the lazy Australian I am, I'd probably not even notice.
OR I'd start a ing resistance.

It will be a self-fulfilling prophecy. The 2012 people will be upset nothing happened on the big day. So, somehow, they will cause the launch of all the nuclear weapons in the world.

Can't some asteroid or comet that comes relatively (and you how much that can mean in this universe...) close to the Earth, it can shift magnetic forces and whatnot?
