    raaka's NORSE roster

    FEATURES

Norse Roster includes 13 unique units for Norway, including Sons of Stormenn and
Veiðimenn. The roster is mainly infantry-based groups from post- viking age to late
middle age. Gunpowder and religious units are still in the roster.

    INSTALLATION

    1. DLV 6.0
    2. DLV 6.2
    3. Run DLV 6.2 once to build sound files!
    4. Taiji's Battle Ballance 2.6 (which includes the Norse Roster)

    UNITS

    Leiðangr

Leiðangr is an early form of Norse local army, consisting of common townfolk and
farmers that are levied into the army. They are equipped with a spear and shield,
helmet and an occasional aventail. Levy armies form the backbone of Norse armies as
professional troops were scarse and seldom needed thus the quality of leiðangr is
better than an average European levy. Leiðangr are capable of forming shield wall,
which was a typical form of fighting during the earlier Viking days.

Leiðangr are equipped with a spear and shield, helmet and an occasional aventail.

    Veiðimenn

Veiðimenn are hunters from dense Scandinavian forests. Hardened in harsh northern
conditions and skilled in use of hunting bow they can take down light armoured
opponents from distance. They are wielding two handed axes but cannot stand their
ground against professional units in melee.

Veiðimenn are equipped with a bow and are wearing multilayered leather and fur
armour. Veiðimenn are wielding two handed axes.

    Gestir

Low born prefessional warriors acting as a kind of police force, doing errands for the
king, executing his justice and collecting his taxes. Gestir are equipped with a couple
of javelins, an axe, a shield and are wearing mail. They are ferocious professional
assault unit however due to their mercenary nature they are known to switch sides.

Gestir are equipped with javelins, an axe and a shield in melee and are wearing mail.

    Húskarlar

Early bodyguards to Scandinavian Jarls originally dating back to Viking age.
Ferocious professional warriors wielding two handed Danish axes. Huskarlar slowly
disappeared when there was no need for personal armies and the christian medieval
    society started to shape up.

Húskarlar are equipped with a two handed axe and mail.

    Hirðmenn

Well-equipped group of warriors, the main body of king's retainers. During early
period used as king's bodyguards fighting on foot, later becoming a recruitable unit.

Hirðmenn are wearing mail, later lamellar and are wielding a sword and a shield.

    Landvarnarmenn

Landvarnarmenn is local army consisting of local townfolk and farmers levied into
the army. They are equipped with a spear and shield, helmet and an aventail and
wear padded armour. Levy armies form the backbone of Norse armies as professional
troops were scarse and seldom needed thus the quality of landvarnarmenn is better
    than an average European levy.

Landvarnarmenn are equipped with a spear and shield and wear aventail and
    padded armour.

    Sverdstafs Landvarnarmenn

Sverdstafs landvarnarmenn is a levy unit consisting of men with battle experience.
Armed with a 'sverdstafs', a sword-staff, a scandinavian polearm coming in many
shapes but was essentially composed of a pole and a sword.

Sverdstafs landvarnarmenn equipped with a sword staff and wearing padded
armour with an occasional coat of plates.

    Lásboga Landvarnarmenn

Lásboga landvarnarmenn are common men, townfolk and farmers levied into the
army. Wearing padded armour and equipped with a 'lásboga', a crossbow,
landvarnarmenn are usually called up in the time of distress. Norse medieval levy
armies are of better quality than their European counterparts however they cannot
match professional units under any circumstances.

Lásboga landvarnarmenn are equipped with a crossbow and a spear and are wearing
    padded armour.

    Sons of Stormenn

Sons of Stormenn, 'Great men', eager to prove their worth and follow the footprints of
their noble fathers. Able to afford good equipment, Stormenns Sonr wear coat of plates
armour and wield a spear axe, a precessor of halberd. These weapons came in many
forms, combining axe and spear suitable for both hacking and thrusting movement.

Stormenns Sonr wear coat of plates and wield a spear axe, precessor of halberd

    Frelsir

"The Saved" were nobles and churchmen of medieval times in Scandinavia. The name
comes from the fact that were spared from paying taxes. Well equipped in medieval
standards but less trained than knights, Frelsir are capable of dishing out significant
damage even against armoured opponents with their heavy poleaxes.

Frelsir are wearing plate and equipped with heavy poleaxes.

    Stormenn

Stormenn, the 'Great Men' were the cream of the Norse nobles. They are extremely well
equipped, matching European standards, and are equipped with a sword, a shield
and wear half plate. There are only a couple of hundred dubbed knights in Norway
and due to the terrain Stormenn were not experienced in mounted combat preffering
to fight on foot in many occasions.

Stormenn are wearing half plate and are wielding axes.

    Svenner

Svenner, 'boys' are squires aspiring to the rank of knighthood. They are lightly
armoured, wearing mail and wielding spear and are excellent in running down
routers and skirmishers. Due to difficult terrain and dense forests Norse are not
experienced in mounted warfare. They prefer local lightly build horse breeds when
    mounted.

Svenner are mounted nobles equipped with a spear, a shield and wearing mail.

    Riddere

Riddere are the dubbed knights of Norway. They are extremely well equipped,
matching European standards, and are equipped with a sword, a shield and wear
half plate. Scandinavian terrain, many lakes and dense forest are not optimal for
mounted fighting. Local smaller horse breeds were used thus riddere are seldom a
    match for their European counterparts.

Ridder are wearing half plate and wielding polearms. They use maces as secondary
    weapons.

YESS, finally someone makes Norwegian units!!! I hope this will be implened, specially Hirdmenr, Gestir & Norse Hunters. Very dark and DLV-ish!

Hirdmennr - could replace the Kingdomes 2h sword, bacause the animation issue.

Leidang - Replace the Peasent spearmen, because they are practically the same.

Gestir - Replace the Raiders or Housecarl(is more viking-ish), as Gestir is more medieval-ish. Depends, on Gestir is heavy or light class...

Huskarlar - Replace the Icelandic Axemen

Norse Hunters - This one is one of the best units Ive ever seen!! This one realy brings out the Norwgian in the game. A possible replace the Norse Archers.

    The Hird:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Hirdman (plural Hirdmen) is a word in Scandinavian languages (notably Norwegian and Swedish), literally for a member of a Hird 'household, family'.
It is used as a title, originally, even in Norse mythology, for informal companions or retainers of the powerful, in the unruly old (often still pagan) times especially as companions in arms, later more refined like courtiers, a development not unlike that of the thegn or the Roman comes.
When the Norwegian royal hird had developed into a formal court, hirdman became the title of the highest of its four ranks, those magnates who were allowed to seat in the royal council (the closest feudal equivalent of a cabinet) and thus had a say in governmental and other important matters.

    Chapel-de-fer:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Chapel-de-fer:

    Maille Hauberk:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

A shirt made from mail is a hauberk if knee-length, haubergeon if mid-thigh length, and byrnie if waist-length. Mail leggings are called chausses, mail hoods coif and mail mittens mitons. A mail collar hanging from a helmet is camail or aventail. A mail collar worn strapped around the neck was called a pixane or standard.

    Heater shield:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Heater shields were typically made from thin wood overlaid with leather.

The unit Riddere (late) is not used in Norway, at least not the mounted type.

PS: If you dont understand all the Norse texst, let me know.

If you need extreme detail on armour/ weapon and clothing. Articles of north euro medieval(mainly skandinavian), aswell as 2D pictures giving detail on armour and weapon. let me know.

Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

Awsome dude, shows that your very connected with your mod, and yes, I'm a pure viking. Born with skis on my feets. Raised in Vik(Delta coast, between Norway and Sweeden). Thats makes me a viking.
I know a pack of norwegian vikings on a research forum for Norse armour, weapon & clothing; regarding high/late-medieval Norway. Very detailed.

    Post your question.

I agree, they have a good flavor to them, tastes like... preserved fish. Mmmm.

    Nice work Raaka!

@blackleaf, I thought viking is not a nationality but an activity. You go viking, you don't be a viking. Viking is raiding by ship isn't it?

If you look at the skandinavian map. http://totalwar.honga.net/faction.php?v=dlv6&f=norway

You see the part were denmark almost Oslo in the ***? That was called Vik. A [V] upside-down. In the medieval ages, these people were renowned for getting beserk on the rest of the civil population of europe. A Viking(south-east Norway and south-west Sweeden).

    Some ideas:

I'd give the spears a seaxe secondary - for use in the shieldwall.

The 1h sword and axe guys could have javelins as a primary - historically they would have maybe 1 or 2 spears to chuck?

The 1h sword guys could do with a version that uses a spear primary and sword secondary - for a mounted version.

Make sure that units have a consistant armor level - not a mix of leather soldiers and heavy mail soldiers in the same upgrade for example.

    That's it, just my opinion

Personally I've not found a well balanced way to work with melee inf that have 2 weapons but I am working on it.

    @Blackleaf, I stand corrected

EDIT: Another suggestion, ask the Rusichi team if you can use the axe from their junior axe militia - it puts the axes those Huscarls are using to shame. You can check it out on our Woodsmen.

Beautiful work. Finally something that doesn't try to be a Hollywoodesque Viking depiction.

Immediately as I watched this I felt some urge to pile some info, but I think blackleaf has got probably the most useful you'll find around here.

Though for symbols I suggest being careful with using the typical Nordic Cross (This was used by Norway only after the Danish Union period in the 1800s), perhaps try to bring in the Raven banner (originally a pagan symbol which represents Odin's raven, but was still very much used during the Medieval ages), Norse serpents, Lion with axe (the national coats of arm of Norway).

Very good idea. I don't think all "politician" were catholic. Maybe a few shields could represent the Conservative - Who hold on to the Old gods. As others represent the Socialist - who wan't to unite Norway.

There is also the question about protecting the AI general from the Players Cav_charge... Is there a possibility to force a unit to start as schiltrom defult, not box?

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

A pic from 1370 of the three northern countries. Gold lion on red backround was (maybe) first used in 1103 by Magnus Berrføtt. insert a silver axe If you want. In 1280 inserted Magnus Lagabøtte that axe in the lions hand an the crown on his head.. the danebrog with the blue cross inside was made after denmark-norway...

    Anyways! AWWWWWEEEEESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Will you make dismounted bodyguards?
    That would have been awesome!

    EDIT:

Can you make some javelinmen to? It bothers me that Norway dont have any spearthrowers, although the sagas is filled with it.

I really like the look of those early and late units man, great job. Lets try to get the ball home this time ("no" pressure intended). I do have to pic on your choice of names tho:

Landevaernet doesnt excist, the Leidangr force is still inforce until 1429 and used in 1563 and 1567, untill 1610. Named it to Heavy Leidangr, Leidangr Garrison or Danish Landevaern.
    Småsvenner rename to Skutilsveinr (squire).
Ridder renamed to Kertilsveinr (combines Knight and Baron title from 1180 to 19th century).

Farming / commen man military system in Norway:

--Leiðangr-- The system reached its peak at year 1000, parts of the Norwegian and Danish Leidang had parts of western europe under it's controll. From 12century, Bishops were leading the Leidang armys to war. 1277 AD, 270 Levy marine posts across the country. The last Leidang mission was in 1393 in Oslo region against invading Slavic-german forces. Even in 1563, when sweden had in mind to capture the north norwegian trading fleet and the soutern trading hub of Oslo - A Bergen Landsmann (baron) assembled 4000 men from Bergen on the basis of Leidang system.

--Professionalism-- Late 13th century, the professionalism of a feudal system is twice tryed, but is belived to have failed to assamble a working unit. (Hirdskråen chaptor. 36 i NglL II) (Hovever, who knows if Norway had conquerd sweden by that time, at least there is will to do it when they did not have sweden.)

--Legd/Landvaernet-- aka. Array defence, a farm community duty, a Landvern. Legd = farming community/land duty. Soldat = solider. Therefor the word Legdsoldat / Community solider. The Legd system is tryed twice in Norway, but fails in 1370s and 1550, it included some of what the leidang was, but this time a group of farming communitys had to assembly a group of more land based soliders. Norway is sea dependent country. It was installed in Denmark in 1400th century and the military Legd system in 1611-1613 and onward til todays Norway. The norwegian army was created with a warorder from Christian IV January the 18, 1628. It was buildt on Legds system. It meant that each farm were collected in Legder which should assemlbe a solider each or the most, 1 pr seven head of the population.

--Decline of military-- 13th century was a very peacefull time, and only used few times in the late middelages(1563). The last Leidang war fleet stands in 1429, and the rest of the fleet evolves to a merchant fleet instead. Norway had simply no use for any defence force nor military. It was all peace, which is offcourse contra to what TW: DLV is at high and late military history. Instead of a national system, the very few strong local groups and their garrison, the Knights/Barons (Skutilsveinr/Landsmenn), and their armed squires (Kjertesveinr/Knægter/Svenner) + armed foreign mercenarys from the continent was the main military of Norway between aprox. 1350 to arpox. 1611: The core of the norwegian high and late army was combine of: Hirdmenn, fraelse, ridder, Svärdstaev Landevaernet-(renamed to Armbrøstskydtere) and småsvenner(renamed to Kertilveinr) + mercenarys which come from Mercenary bildings. Leidangr as an institution is stll intact, but only in barren emergencys.

-A swedish noble man said he could surrender the Kingdom with 2 war ships and 300 men. Offcourse he was beaten back.
