BTW, I forgot to indicate that, in this case, the proper form of the adjective is "ROMANA" instead of "ROMANI"

One option for the book and article list is to put in the Protectores Domestici Group that I run.

I'm on page 20 of Peter Heather's The Fall of the Roman Empire: A New History of Rome and the Barbarians.

Thanks for the recommendations, everybody. Question: has anybody else read Guy Halsall, Barbarian Migrations and the Roman West, 376-568? In my opinion, it's a great counterpoint to, say, Heather, especially on the subject of migrations, and Halsall's book has the merit of not addressing the reader as though he were giving a university lecture (thinking of the references to "Tintin" and Star Trek, and the "yah-boo-sucks" quote from Heather's books ). Anyway, I'd strongly recommend it for a great synthesis of recent secondary literature.

Heather also has a new book on the Barbarian migrations that I feel you should investigate.

This is the one to which you refer http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/i...266239&s=books
Not only does Heather discuss Germanic society and migrations, but also discuses later Slavonic and Viking migrations, including those in the East, the formation of the Rus trading cities on the Dnieper and Volgar. I enjoyed it

I just bought The Ruin of the Roman Empire by James J. O'donnell. It's about Justinian's Reconquest till the arab expansion. I'll tell you how it goes in a new post.

If this is the book I'm thinking of then I'd be a bit cautious about it as it has been given very mixed reviews by academics and historians alike.

Yes, it has a slightly pessemistic tone to it in some areas, but there was 20% off at Books a mil so I got it for 12 bucks

I wouldn't say he is pessmistic and the mixed reviews come from not everyone sharing his views, with regard to the fall of the Roman empire being in the sixth century and not the fifth. He feels strongly that so called barbarians were more Roman than Romans. Its best in my humble opinion to make your own judgement. That said it is well written and twelve bucks as you put it, well spent. Enjoy, let us know what you think

His views on the western empire after aetius agree with mine, that events after 455 AD are insignifigant, and that with the death of aetius and the death of the theodosian dynasty made the empire go from a stable situation to a downward spiral into oblivion.
