Don't attack us please, UK ads to say on Pak TV

London: The British Government will air ads on Pakistani television urging terrorists to not attack Britain.

Prominent British Muslims will star in the British Foreign Office-funded £400,000 (approximately Rs 2.9 crore)-campaign that is set to break on Pakistani television next Monday, ‘The Guardian’ reported on Tuesday.

The three-month public relations offensive, called ‘I Am the West’, will also include high-profile events in regions such as Peshawar and Mirpur, ‘The Guardian’ said. Seven in ten British Pakistanis are Mirpuris.

According to ‘The Guardian’, the first three ads in the project will feature British Communities Minister Sadiq Khan, UK manager of Islamic Relief Jehangir Malik, former England Under-19 captain and promising Worcestershire allrounder Moeen Ali, and the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Chaudry Abdul Rashid, a Mirpuri.

The campaign, the paper said, will be targeted at ‘15-25-year-old males who are less than well-educated and worldly wise, but potentially susceptible to extremist doctrines’. Nine 30-second commercials, supported by ads on radio, will be aired on PTV, Geo TV and Khyber among other channels. If the Pakistani campaign is successful, it will be extended in Egypt, Yemen and Indonesia.

The central theme of the campaign, ‘The Guardian’ said, "is to assert that there is no contradiction in being a Muslim and being British." It has four key aims, the daily reported: ‘to ensure Pakistanis realise the west is not anti-Islamic, that British society is not anti-Islam, to demonstrate the extent to which Muslims are integrated into British society and to stimulate and facilitate constructive debate on the compatibility of liberal and Muslim values’.

And an even better one would be if the Pakistani government was doing the ads.

And even better than that if the religeous leaders were.

If the British are really earnest in this regard, they'll remove their occupying forces from Iraq and Afghanistan and stop giving terrorists excuses to attack their country.

I mean, what are they gonna say on those ads? "Hey, we're still invading your country, bombing freedom-fighters as well but killing mostly civilians but but but please don't attack us, k?"

This has got to be the epitome of ridiculousness and farcicality. It's like when Obama said, "we're not your enemies, Muslims". Well, no one thinks Americans hate Muslims but actions speak louder than words - remove your armies from Muslim countries and for once, just for once, become an impartial mediator and partner-in-peace in the Palestinian-Israel issue. THAT'S how you stop terrorists and murderers from doing what they do in people's neighborhoods. Also, it would be nice if you stopped publicly supporting men like Hosni Mubarak, who kidnap and torture Facebook users for posting the "wrong" sort of stuff about the government.

Wow, the UK is resorting to begging?

    That's just.... just.... dang.

Granted, I'm not saying they should go around blowing crap up, like the USA's foreign policy has been for the last eight years, but still.

The romans used to bribe barbarians to stop them from raiding their territory when the empire collapsed.

This just shows that it is difficult to learn from past mistakes.

Given the effect of the media on any population, it could even work.
Though I suspect it may increase immigration into Britain from Pakistan in the long run, if this becomes a long term thing.

It's not begging Than. It's how the actual war of ideology will be won. This ''war on terror'' as it is often called, does not have a physical and traditional battlefield, open ground, mountains on one side, some trenches etc. with armoured soldiers on each side firing guns. No. The battlefields are everywhere around us, the weapons are human voices and pictures, and the combatants are anyone and everyone.

This war is built almost entirely upon ignorance.

This is how we win this. Through education.

waste of money, meh in the end it could even convince some groups to strike at the UK as a response....kind of unproductive.

on the fact that this is more a conflict (war is a wrong term imho, and the "war on terror" phrase is really stupid) of ideas than a military one we agree, on the fact that these ads would have some results....your average madrassa educated, unemployed and angry pakistani youth (the target of these ads it seems, considering that thats the groups of people that are possible terror recruits) to who would belive?

To the imam that has schooled him since childhood, brainwashing him that the west is the enemy of the ummah, that by god will it must be destroyed and so on, or to these ads? The answer is evident.

The only solution, you said, is education. Exactly.
Giving financial help to give a secular education to these youths, both in Pakistan and in the whole North africa/middle east, stop the Saudi Arabian funds to radical clerics, denounce religious extremism, improve gender equality, put pressure to open these states economy to help economic growth, would require a bit of time but would do wonders against religious extremism and youth radicalizations.

I think the answer is eductation as well, but not quite like this. First we need to cut support to Saudi Arabia and Wahhabi organisations, since they provide a kind of theological base that legitimatises Takfir, rebellion and general religious anarchy. We should also provide funds to competing Orthodox Sunni and Shia organisations. Then, once the fertile soil that terrorism grows in is removed, we need to begin educating people more about the middle east. If people start realising that both Israel and Palestine are at fault, that Americans are not part of a NWO conspiracy and that Muslims are not always innocent victims then we will get somewhere. It seems very difficult, and it will be, but I believe we can do it, after all we managed to completely destroy smoking in the space of a few decades.
Of course, this needs to be coupled with policing and other 'hard' actions, as well as better educating non-Muslim bigots that could end up throwing the whole thing into a big mess. Plus it is important that this campaign is not connected with all-out Islamic Liberalism, since that would end up ruining any trust from the Islamic community that Britain has recieved. The government would no longer be seen as being against terrorism but as wanting to corrupt Islam.
It is possible to be both socially conservative and non-violent, as we see with Orthodox Jews or the Mormons. There are even communities like this within Islam (Sufi Tariqas), but Wahhabis put Takfir on them and believe it is completely acceptable to persecute them.

You can show how Muslims have integrated into British society, but in the end, it's still begging them to not attack.

Last time I checked, no Pakistani has attacked Britain in 62 years. The people who blew us up were our own people. Already 'integrated' into British culture, with thick Yorkshire accents. Lived not even that far from me, and not that far from my mosque.

Then if there haven't been any attacks, why start all of a sudden now? Just precautions?

    @Than.

Pakistan is the KEY to this war. If they hate us based on retarded prejudice and ignorance, we can't get anywhere. The hope here is that if the Pakistani people realise the truth and stop hating us, so will our resident Britons of Pakistani origin. [as the OP says 70% of whom are from the same region, the one being focused on]
