Not really. Its also rather useful if your opponent's army consists of a lot of horse archers or missile troops in general. But yes, when it comes to melee, the testudo isn't that good.
another quick question, is it possible to stop the roman legions to throw their javelins and head off to comabt directly? cause it is getting annoying how long some legions take to react while the enemy army has already started teh attack
Love is the most powerful thing on Earth, unless you have access to weaponry.
What are those roman legions ? I don't remember them in vanilla ?!
wtf?
ummm have you heard of the game rome total war? yeah well when you get the game, which is what this forum is about, you start off the imperial campaign as one of the three roman families. the julii, the scipii and the brutii. now the keypoint about this fact is that you HAVE to play as rome to play any other faction unless you edited the descr_strat file. chances are you would have reached the marian reforms if you played for over 50 turns at least.
Er, well, the Hastati and Principes both have Pila, but not the Testudo. After you get the Marian Reforms, you can train Early Legion Cohorts, then Legion Cohorts and finally Praetorian and Urban Cohorts, as well as First (both Early Legion and Legion) Cohorts once you've taken Rome. Only the Post-Marian units possess the Testudo (unsure about the Imitation and SS Legions).
I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.

I have only heard it lol. That's the problem, I think. (: Anyway.
I barely every use testudo, but occasionally if you cock up and some seige towers are set on fire it can protect them whilst you redirect infantry traffic to other towers. It takes them ages to get into formation though. Often useful against egyptians if anyone or Scythia. If it was on RTW then the WRE and ERE would have a much easier time against the Huns.

Testudo is missile bait. It is useful when:
1. Assaulting walls
2. Facing an enemy with alot of missiles troops. Send some cohorts in testudo about 1-200 yds ahead of ur line, and watch as the missiles fall uselessly to the ground.
3. Anytime u need missile defense.
Testudo slowly tires ur men and is very, very slow to move in, so use it wisely. It is by no means useless, though.
Of these facts there cannot be any shadow of doubt: for instance, that civil society was renovated in every part by Christian institutions; that in the strength of that renewal the human race was lifted up to better things-nay, that it was brought back from death to life, and to so excellent a life that nothing more perfect had been known before, or will come to be known in the ages that have yet to be. - Pope Leo XIII
i remember a youube video showing an episode from the BBC 2 Hit series made with RTW called Time Commanders, in the Battle of Watling Street, the team on the show tried to use Testudo as an offensive Tactic!![]()

And then done it facing away from the enemy who were killing there men.
the tetsudo can be abused to kill the scythian horse archers.
