    Default Console on Vista

I know this is a problem that has been bugging me since I got a new desktop a couple of months ago. I upgrade to Vista, and suddenly, the tilde key doesn't open the console any more! No key does, in fact.

Well, after a little bit of searching, I've found the solution. I've seen the problem posted about before, but seen no solution on TWC, so here it is. Sorry if this solution has been found before, but I thought it might be useful for people like me.

I've taken this information from here: http://shoguntotalwar.yuku.com/topic/39031

first, you go to the map "data".
now go to the folder "text".
use a standard text editor (like notepad/word etc.) to open "descr_shortcuts"
go down until u see "misc." (at the start of the line)
there should be a line with "show_console" here, and it says "hidden" behind it.
remove "hidden" and save the file

start Rome: Total War, go to controls and press reset to default
there should now be a line "show debug console" in the list of misc. controls
set whatever key u like to it, press the key during the game, and there you go, a nice console
Let me know if this worked for you.

Odd, I've never had this problem with Vista. Then again, the damn thing is so unpredictable that you never know what problems it'll throw your way...

Some have it, some don't. I've heard the Media Center edition (the one I've got) is particularly bad.

Sorry, the source of this has a bit of a typo: he says 'maps' when he should say 'folder'. You should look for the text folder within the Data folder. Then edit descr_shortcts within that.

it should, windows vista wasnt really the problem before although apperantly a special media version did affect the consol. Other than that the files should be exactly the same.

you need to put the file your editing onto your desktop to edit with some Vista (mabe windows 7, but i dont know) versions. As long as you have administrator rights you can cut the correct files out, paste them to desktop, edit and save them, then cut paste them back in. if you think something might go wrong make a backup file (copy all the text, and paste it into a completly new notepad).

Also, when cutting the file out, it will tell you you need to be an adminstrator to do this (even if you are), and you can "continue anyway" or "cancle". Click the continue any way (i think its that, if not then just the one that isnt cancle) and it will let you do what you want. It will also say that when pasteing files back in.
