Default SGfNP-->Merchants and resources. Update: 13 feb. 09

    Hey

I allways have my own personal resources I send my merchent to. This is also related that I play in the same region, most of the time. So, can you name your most attractive resources for your factions:
    1. Region name:
    2. Resources:

      • Small text:
I also noticed that silver produce more then gold etc. Normal? What is the top 5 best resources?

Try not to duplicate resources, and Thank you!

Great post from all. specially TWmadman, musicdemon and Joh. I think you're getting a section in the in SGfNP-thread.

I still miss all the resources east of the baltics and -germany, north from Kiev. You know the area. Also from moors to ayyubid. Aswell as Iberia.

    Top 5 resources:
    1. Silver
    2. Sugar
    3. Gold/Spices/Salt
    4. Sulphur

    • Initial value of the resource (ivory is more valuable than timber)
    • Distance of the closet resource of that type to your capital (not the specific resource location your merchant sits on, but the closest of that resource type to your capital). So if you are England, with your capital in London with, let's say timber resource close by, you will get little cash dealing with timber even if your merchant is on the other edge of the map.
    • Level of your trade structures, the higher the merrier. This will help your merchants receive better traits from the start.
    • Level of your merchants, which can be gained training them in a province with two equal resources as long as no merchant from other faction is exploiting the other one. As a plus, you will get double the revenue from the resource. If you manage to get two merchants on both resources, then you get x4 the cash plus training for both merchants. There are 3???? train levels, and you want to get to the monopolistic trait* (+3). As already mentioned, setting other merchants out of business gives you +1. In some cases, resisting a take over from other merchants will also give you a +1.
    • Province relation to your Kingdom. Your provinces produce the most, then allies, then neutral and finally enemies.

If you put one of your merchant on one of them and if another merchant's faction is working on the other one, you'll never get the monopole.
The best is to put your uber merchant in one of the two silver spot, then to put your noob merchant on the other one. This one your uber merchant will kick other merchants while the noob is getting exp. after 10 turns, you ll get two Madoff playing wall street.

EDIT - Here are some general tips from the guide that pertain to the Mechants Guild:

    1) You get 10 points in each city for the Merchants Guild when you make a successful acquisition
    2) Getting trade rights with other factions also gives a universal 10 point bonus in each city
    3) Buildings related to the guild always give you points when you build them (Market, Fairground, etc.)
    4) Your Faction's Income also gets you points every turn. If it's over 10,000, you'll get 4 points per turn
    5) Acquisition and Trade Rights missions are two-edged swords. If you complete them, you'll get points. If you fail them, you lose the same amount of points.

I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

the most important is to get a monopole
for exemple, near frankfurt and near Buda/Pest there is a silver monopole (2 same ressource in one region) you have to put a merchant in one of them to get a bonus which double the normal benefice + watch out that none of ennemies merchant is trying to take the second spot, for sure you could put 2 merchants to secure the area and get money from the two spots of silver in frankfurt for exemple. don't forget to get trade with faction which owns ressources to maximize the profit.
you can find spices monopole in Venice region or salt monopole in zaghreb regions for exemple.

when your merchants get the traits "monopolist" you know you are going to have good days.

atm i have 2 merchants on silver monopole in frankfurt +2 on silver monopole in Buda + 2 on salt monopole in zaghreb + 2 on spices monopole in Venice and i own average 16 000 $ per turn

    Cork, Ireland
    Fur

Ireland is fur heaven....Nice Silver mine in Dublin as well....Weird graphic querk, One fur resource is on top of Lumber resource in Ireland. I think Cork is intended as a 'monopoly' region but I don't think it's working properly

TWmadman.......Great tip....Are you more likely to pick up "monopolist" with One Merchant in "Double" resource regions? In other words..If you put a merchant on both of the tiles does that trait "not happen"?

Great idea Blackleaf.... We can create some really useful glossaries for the guide with threads like this...With everybody getting their two cents in...

    2 marble resources

Im curious about the double merchant thing too. Ive had both resourcess covered with a merchant all the time because they both make 1500 fl per turn and have the monopolist trait.

    Just a question about resources:
Why are there some double entries in the descr_strat.txt?
See the copy from the specific file [example from line 118 - line 126]:
    Code:
    resource furs, 454, 199
    resource silver, 405, 180
    resource silver, 7, 209
    resource silver, 7, 209
    resource silver, 7, 209
    resource silver, 7, 209
    resource silver, 7, 209
    ;resource silver, 5, 232
    resource silver, 154, 290
Do they add to the value of the resource - is the income increased that way?
A mini-mod is never late! Nor is it ever early. It arrives precisely when I mean it to do!

you could put both merchants in two silver monopole they ll get the monopolist trait, lvl 10 merchant on a silver monopole own 2600$ average per turn, so 5000$ per turn with two merchants on silver monopole like frankfurt

you could find many monopoles, textiles, glass spices and marble only in north italy. After, benefit depends on the type of ressource.

for exemple, there are 2 spots of spicies in venice region, if you put one of your merchant on one of them and if another merchant's faction is working on the other one, you'll never get the monopole. the monopole bonus is different from the trait, the trait is a result of that monopole which gives +4 finance. before the monopole trait you'll get "market controller". So watch out other merchants, the best is to put your uber merchant in one of the two silver spot, then to put your noob merchant on the other one. This one your uber merchant will kick other merchants while the noob is getting exp. after 10 turns, you ll get two Madoff playing wall street

That really drives home how important Merchant Income is in DLV... Once Dark Ages happen, for some factions if you haven't set up your merchants properly...you are just done...Forget about it

wine from constantinople. large amount of money at least playing kiev.

its monopolistic too. and you can jump to iconium riches and trebizond silver without too much hassle. you also have silk in constantinople that is not that bad either, and two lesser winerys close by

its wine or dye.. i always end up mixing them in my head..

yeah i think its wine... anyway, 2 of them in constantinople, violet. cant miss.

Playing as Ireland, I go for the mines in the north eastern half of the island early game, then mines in England near London and York.

After that, vineyards (wine) near Rennes and Angers are close, as is the cloth and dye in Flanders. The best nearby I can find is glass next to Paris.

Awesome post Jon! Nice link with great tips from Musicdemon as well....

    + rep!

    Blackleaf,

I love how you are organizing the thread! It's giving me some focus on how to organize the guide further and make it more efficient! Thank you, You are becoming my partner in crime.

I'm going to take your lead and organize the Faction Difficult Thread in a similar fashion..

For anyone reading this, if you remember some old threads you were part of that have info relevant to this thread or the Faction Difficulty thread please post the links in the new threads. It will help me (and Blackleaf) gather all the best info on the subjects for the guide proper ( and generate good conversation). Players with great tips will be put in the guide (credited of course) Thank you!

@ Xtiaan, yeah, I added Sicely in your thread, just to help you out. You should make one section for historical and one for Defult campaign.

For both these threads I'm going to create sections in the guide that point to these two threads so people can get find the best info available atm when reading through the guide. That way we can get loads of good stuff together and put it in the guide at a comfortable pace.

Yea, We need tons of faction write-ups! But it will be really cool when we are done cause we will have strategies from dozens of great players!
