    Default Lake Erie ice floe

    http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/02/07/Ohi...rss_topstories

One person died Saturday in connection with the rescue of hundreds of people cast adrift on an ice floe in Lake Erie, a Coast Guard official involved in the effort said...The ice floe, 8 miles long, was created when a piece of ice broke off from land near Locust Point, Ohio, east of Toledo, Lanier said...At least 100 and as many as 500 people were stranded, authorities said...The National Weather Service issued a warning Saturday that ice floes could break away from the main ice area in the western section of Lake Erie...Some people are on four-wheelers, she said, and others are fishermen..."They're in good spirits," Wells said. "They feel kind of embarrassed."
Being from Toledo, I can say this. Those people are all morons. It is 8 degrees C in Toledo. Everyone knew it was going to be well above the freezing point today. Not to mention predictions of rain and winds gusts. And yet these people went out onto the Lake with snowmobiles, 4 wheelers and fishing poles...

What is is with people and being stupid...the only people I can forgive are those rescued by hovercrafts. I would get stranded on a ice floe if I was going to get rescued by a hovercraft.

Regardless, these people should have to pay for the fuel the USCG used. The news was predicting high temperatures all week for today...

    What do you all think...?

Leave them stranded on the ice I say. Darwinian selection at it's finest. It should be there responsibility to make it back to shore. This would prove that they are indeed worthy of passing on the DNA to the next generation.

Hahaha! Exactly! You would not believe how stupid people behave when around the lake. I have seen people boat past the bouys into Camp Perry's firing range...sadly they didn't get blown up...

I am sure it is the result of mixing powerboats, beer and hillbillies.

Yes. I have heard from a coworker of my dad's who know use to be a firefighter and knows some coasties. They do charge people to be rescued, especially considering most of these people have to get rescued every year.

These people put planks and pallets over the huge crack on the ice floe to get onto it! There was a huge crack and they still got on! My hometown is filled with champions.

I can just imagine the type of conversation: "Hurry! If we don't get on the ice now it's gonna float away!"

Honestly, does every topic in the mudpit have to degenerate into this area?

The best part was using pallets and boards to cross weak cracked ice to get to where the action was. I bet the same geniuses sped up through red lights.

They also make great firewood for those iceflow bonfires I can just imagine these people starting a fire for heat and then watching as it melts through the ice.

Depends on where you live. Somebody paid the rescue costs. It was not the idiots.

If you watch that video, the sheriff stated, in between expressing his anger at stupid people how it costs $4000 dollars an hour to operate the helicopter. And because the ice is drifting it is moving into another county.

And because of sheer stupidity, it is taking up valuable amounts of manpower. What if there was a fire at the oil refinery in Oregon? And over half the rescue squads are out on the lake?

So we can branch this off...the sheriff mentioned stupidity laws and if we had them all those people would be under arrest. What do you think about stupidity laws?

This is why many states have a search and rescue fund card that you can buy or that is an add on to parks passes and hunting licenses. A better solution than a stupidity law. Those that do not pay into the rescue fund are personally liable and will get billed by the government.
